ALONZO A. CASLER, OF MANSFIELD, OI-IIO, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS E. ORARY,
OF BINGHAMTON, NFHV YORK.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,910, dated March 25, 1902.
Application filed May 17,1901.
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALONZO A. CASLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inWashing-llrlachines,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in washing machines, and especially to that class which embodies a rotary tub provided at the bottom with rubbing-cleats and an upper rubbing-disk separate from the tub.
The objects of my invention are to provide an improved means for centering the upper rubbing-disk within the suds-tub and to allow a vertical sliding movement to the same and to provide a novel means for holding the upper rubbing-disk from rotating with the rotation of the suds-tub. These objects I accomplish by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved machine with the suds-tub in section, showing the general construction of the parts hereinafter specified and claimed. Fig. 2 is a top view of the base, showing the construction of the frame and spring attachment. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the upper rubbing-disk, hinged arm, and vertical post.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
In the accompanying drawings, A indicates a base provided at its center with a bearing, and upon the same rests the suds-tub B. Secured upon the top of the base is the platform C, placed diagonally across the same. One end of the platform is placed flush with the edge of the base, the end D projecting a sufficient distance to admit the suds-tub to rotate without touching or coming in contact with the vertical post E. The said post E is secured in position by the metal angle-bracketsFand F. A center post Gextends through the bottom of the suds-tub and into the upper end II of the rotating vertical huh I. The nut J clamps the suds-tub firmly upon the said hub. The upper rubbing-disk R sur- Serial No. 60,735. (No model.)
rounds the center post G, which holds the same centrally within the tub. Secured upon the top of the post E is a casting K, having upwardly-projecting lug L, which is perforated to receive the arm M, which is pivoted therein. To the outer end of this arm are pivoted or hinged the rods N, the lower ends of which are bent outwardly to engage eyes P P, secured one upon each side of the upper face of the upper rubbing-disk R.
The tub-locking device is composed of a spring-plunger Q, placed within a suitable case S, said plunger being surrounded by a coil-spring and being adapted to engage a socket T, secured upon the side and near the upper edge of the tub. stance I have shown a single spring W, connected to an arm X, extending from a sleeve surrounding the hub I, the other end of said In the present inspring being connected to a suitable bracket Y, secured upon the platform.
What I claim as new is-- 1. In a washing-machine, the combination with a frame and a vertical post forming a part thereof, of a rotating suds-tub, an upper rubbing-disk, and a locking device comprising an arm hinged to the top of said post, and divergent rods hinged to said arm and having their outer ends detachably connected with the said rubbing-disk, as set forth.
2. In a washing-machine, the combination with the frame and avertical post forming apart thereof, of a rotating suds-tub, an upper rubbing-disk provided with eyes on the upper side thereof, and a locking device comprising an arm hinged to the top of said post, and two divergent rods hinged to the arm, the lower ends of the rods being bent outward and inserted into said eyes, substantially as shown and described.
I11 testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALONZO A. OASLER.
