TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it knownth'at I, FRANCIS M. EVERINGHAM, of the town of Lafayette, in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Derrick; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, und exact description of the construction and operation of the saine, reference beinghad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this "specification, in which- Figure I is a side elevation.

I operette my derrick b'y fasten-ing one end of a rope, chain, or leather helt to the drum of the derrick, and from there passing over the cross-beam on vthe post, over the grooved pulleys, and to the other end of the rope is fastened a hook or ring. By raising the lever the fll attached will drop into the ratchet-wheel, and then, by pressing down onthe'lever, as represented in the drawings by dotted lines, the ratchet-wheel will turn, thereby winding up on the drum the rope and raisingA the weight attnched t-O-the hook or ring. When it is vdesired tolower anything attached to'the hook 'or ring, the frictionfhrake working in the slot g in the standard' "h is4 dropped on the ange of the ratchet-Wheel, ns represented in the drawings by dotted' lines, and the flange attached to the let'er is hooked on to the end of said brake, and by pressing down on the lever will allow the rope to pass off ofthe drum as slowly as may hedesired; The friction-hmke-mny also be attached to the lower end of the frnme und press against the flange of the ratchet-wheel, if desired.
