IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-SETS.
flit: 5:1;211111: want in in time rem new art making and at tlgt same.
TO ALL 'WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. WOODWARD, of Franklin, in the county of New London, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saw-Sets and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
, The present invention relates toa new and improved device for setting the teeth of saivs, in which are combined and obtained many important advantages and features, as will be obvious from the following detail description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, in which Figure 1 is a. plan or top view of the saw-set, and
Figure 2 a side view in partial vertical section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A, in the drawings, r'epresentsthe bed-piece of the saw-set, to which one end of the shank B ofthe hammer G is hung or pivoted, so as to swing down upon and upward from the same, the hammer-shank B being tlirown back after each depression by the action of a bent spring, D, suitably attached to the bed-piece A therefor. E,
a. raised flange or lip, extending along the bed-piece A, across the plane of movement of the hammer-shank B, which flange is cut out at 'F to allow the hammer to come fully down upon the said bed-piece or plate. In the bed-piece A, along the flange E, is inserted a strip, G, made of wood or other suitable soft material which will .not injure the teeth of the saw-blade when drawn or slid along upon the same to the action of the hammer G,
as will be hereinafter stated.- H, a rail or strip, secured by its centre stem at in and to the bed-piece A, upon which it extends in a direction parallel to that of the flange E, secured thereto. This rail projects above the surface of the bed-piece A, and by means of a set-screw, I, can be secured in a position with its upper edge J either more or less'distant therefrom, as and for a purpose to be hereinafter stated. The hammer-head G, by its stem K, is secured to the shank B by a set-screw, M, which enables it to be adjusted either more or less out or in, according as may be found necessary to accommodate it to the varying depths of saw-teeth.
In using the saw-set constructed as above described, first adjust the hammer C to the depth of tooth of the saw, when, resting the saw-blade upon the ra-il H, with its; teeth against the guide-flange E upon the soft strip G in the bed-plate, raise or lower the said rail H, according to the amount of set desired, and the device is then ready for use, the saw-blade being drawn or moved along upon the bed-piece A, from time to time, to properly bring its, teeth to the action of the hammer C. Z, aset-screw in bed-piece A, to prevent hammer from compressing or tending to compress the saw-blade.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The hammer-head C, constructed asdescribed, provided with the stem K, fitting longitudinally into the outer or swinging end of the shank B, and adjusted by means of the thumb-screw M, as herein set forth for the'purpose specified.
2. I'also claim the set-screw Z, substantially as and for the purpose described.
' JAMES C. WOODWARD.
