Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. DIXON, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Buttonhole-Stitching Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
The invention herein to be described is intended as an improvement on the machine shown and described in United States Patent No. 498,216, dated May 23, 1893, myinvention having been devised to improve the construction of that part of the stitch-forming mechanism located below the stitch-frame and designated in said patent as the complemental stitch forming mechanism, it coperating With theeye-pointed needle carrying the upper t-hread.
In the machine described iu the patent referred to the looperand the needle or underthread carrier derive their movements through a sliding cam-block grooved at its opposite sides and having at one side a projecting cam, aud in case either of said grooves becomes worn it is necessary to discard the cam-block and substitute another one for it. The camblock is fitted to slide in a rotatable block looper-carrier in said machine is made as a single one-piecelever bored to receive a stationary stud, which constitutes the fulcrum for the lever, and said stud carried by the circularly moving block is surrounded by a spring, said lever acted upon by the projecting cam of the sliding block being moved laterally on its said stud or fulcrum to insure for the looper a movement such as required and fully described in said patent to enable it to travel in a curved path about the plane of movement of the under-thread carrier, said looper at such time standing in and expanding the loop of needle-thread, so that it may be entered by the under-thread carrier as the latter rises through the buttonhole-slit. The under-thread carrier in said machine is shown as a curved needle, having an eye to receive the under thread, and said thread-guide is connected with a needle-carrier adapted to slide in an inclined raceway in said rotatable block, so that the thread-carrier in its movement travels in the arc of a circle which cuts a perpendicular plane in which reciprocates the eye-pointed needle. The needle-carrier derives its movement from a lever which is vibrated about an inclined stud, said lever ,The parts so made when put into operation were found at times to be undesirable, for the reason that they were liable to break or wear unduly, and it was found impracticable to impart to the complemental stitch-forming means an excessively high speed, which it is desirable that a buttonhole-sewing machine shall have.
The improvements to be herein described were therefore devised especially to overcome the objections found in the machine described, to simplify the operation of the parts, and also greatlyincrease the speed of the machine and its durability.
In the present invention the looper-carrier has been divided into three separate detachable parts-viz., a main or body part pivoted on a stud extended from the rotatable block referred to, a swiveled part mounted on said body part and carrying the looper, and a cam part having an irregular camgroove, the'cam part being fixed to the body part, as by a suitable screw. Novel means havebeen provided to turn the swiveled part upon the body part that the looper mayi'n'nave imparted to it at the proper time a lateral movement with relation to the upper needle and the underthread carrier in making the stitch provided for in said machine. To impart movement to the needle-carrier to which is attached the under-thread carrier, a lever has been provided Which may be vibrated in a plane parallel with the plane of inclination of the raceway and the path in which the needle-carrier moves. The circular ring-like part of the casing a4 receives in it the circular upper end 48 of the block 48, and said ring has depending from it a loop-like frame @41, having made through it at its lower end a hole of suitable size to receive loosely the hollow hub X of the gear 45, said gear being applied.V to the sleeve 48 of the block48, it being fixed in position on said sleeve by a suitable nut @20 and a dowel-pin @ 21. v (See Fig. 5.)
The sleeve 48 has extended through it the hollow rod or bar 59, said rod receivf ing in it-s lower end the second or under thread, to be led into the under or second thread carrier 51, the thread being led out from said rod at the point 51X, (see Fig. 10,) and then through a hole GOX in theblock 48. This rod 59 has fixed to it below said gear 45 a ball @22, said ball being, as herein shown, embraced, as it preferably will be, between two loose cup-shaped disks @23 and @212, said disks loosely surrounding said rod and contacting with said ball, said disks resting on forks @25 @26 of a lever @27, pivoted at Q28 bei tween depending hangers @29, connected in suitable manner, as by screws @2922 with the loop-shaped depending portion (141, hereinbe- This lever @L27 is connected mon to saidpatent; but herein the said rod fl is connected in a novel manner with the lever by especial devices of m'yinvention, to be hereinafter described. The connection between the said rod f2 and said lever @27 ,is herein effected by novel means-"as, for instance, theA end of the lever @27 is forked, and between said forks I place a'block @20, (see Fig. 111,) said block being mounted on a stud-screw am, both the said block and said screw being provided with a hole, through which is passed loosely the end ot' said rod, suitable adjusting-nuts, as @22' and @34, being appliedto said rod above and-below said block. This form of ljoint or connection between said rod and lever enables the strain on the rod and block to be in one and the same straightline, and the tendency of clamping and binding of the parts at that end of the lever is entirely done away with.

The cam part has a hole, as Z116, to it over one end ot' a tubular hub or projection Z117 of the body part Z114, said cam part having a hole Z113to receive a stud-screw Z11,'by which to positively connect said cam part tosaid bodypart. The body part has, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2, a hole, which receives in it loosely a studscrew Z113X, the upper end of said screw entering a suitable threaded hole in the swiveling part Z315. The swiveling. part has connected toit by a suitable screw Z121 the looper G3, com-` mon to said patent. The swivel part Z115, supported as described, is free to be turnedwith said screw Z113X as a pivot or center on the body ot' the looper-carrier as the latter -is turned about the stud-screw Z122, which forms the fulcrum for the multipart looper-carrier, said stud-screw entering a suitable threaded hole in the extended part 40, here'iubefore referred to.
The looper has to be vibrated with its stud Z113X as it is beingswung about the stud-screw Z122 to enable the looper to properly enter the loop oit' needlethread and to then expand it and put it in proper position to be entered by the under-thread carrier, the latter after en'- tering the loop of needle-thread held by said looper rising for the buttonhole-slit `and in turn presenting its loop of second or under thread above the material in which the buttonhole is being made, putting it into position to be entered by the needle inits next descent through said Vmaterial back from the edge of the slit, the looper in the meantime being inovedfbackwardly in order that it may come again into proper position to enter the loop of needle-thread. This operation is repeated stitch after stitch. To vibrate this looper, as described, I have provided anindependent device 'carried `by said block 4S iand repre'- sented herein as a Wing C10, mounted (see Fig.
5 on a rock-shaft C12 having its bearings in Z115 of the looper-carrier.

The needlecarrier 50 is provided with a thread-guide 8l, and said carrier has extended from it through a slot in the raceway 49 a studscrew d10, over which ts one end of a link CP2, (see Fig. 6,) said link being in turn connected by a stud-screw cZ13 with the upper end of a lever C111. This lever has its upper end forked, as at dm, and at its opposite end it has a right-angled arm @15, herein represented as made hollow and slotted through both sides, as at d1", (see Fig. S, which shows a section through said arm in the line ir, Fig. 5,) said arm having at one end an eye d, which receives in it an eccentric bushing d18, (shown iu detail in Fig. 10,) said bushing being held in position by a suitable set-screw CZ19, said eccentric forming the fulcrum for said lever CZ11, and by turning said eccentric the stroke of the said segmental block and its attached thread-carrier may be adjusted to a nicety. The hollow arm d15 has a projecting ear d20, which is shown as traveling behind a gib di?, fast on the block 4S, Iwhich, it will be understood, has imparted toit at proper times seinicircular movements by or through a sector-lever 100, which derives its motion from a suitable cam, suitably described and illustrated in United States Patent No. 655,637, dated the 7th dayof August, 1900. The hollow arm d15 receives Within it a slide or loose connection CPS, (shown best in Fig. 5,) said slide having a hole through it transversely, said hole receiving a bushing 121, surrounding a studor screw CZ, said stud or screw beyond said bushing entering a threaded opening in the reciprocating rod or bar 59, said stud or screw also being passed through the slot d1 ot the hollow arm and standing in an inclinedposition in said bar.

This method of connecting the lever d and the reciprocating rod or bar 50 enables said rod to vibrate said lever in a plane parallel to the plane of inclination ot the raceway and move the needle-carrier without the parts binding or straining one with relation to the other, owing to the differents paths the said rod and lever move.
It will be noted that the plane of movement ofl the needle-carrier 50 must 'beinclined to the path of the needle in ord er to a'lloWot the proper concatenation of the threads, and since the rod 59 reciprocates in a path paral# lel to that of the needle adequate provision must be made in the connection between the inclined needle-carrier 50 and the reciprocating rod for the difference in the planes of movement. The lever d is placed in la plane parallelwith the plane of movementof the needle-carrier, and hence the connection between the needle-carrier and the upper end ofthe lever is a simple one; but itis necessary that the pin (F5 on the rod 59 be inclined in which to compensate for the inclinationlof the plane v of movement of the lever. and also that provision should be made for the change in the distancebetween the pin d and the fulcrum of the lever du. , The cam-shaped arm c14 hasa slot in which is fitted to slide loosely a block 610x, (shown in Asection in Fig. .1l,) v said block having through it a hole in which islitted loosely the eccentric elo. The eccentric Yhas a flange cl3, which when fin position contacts with said block, The eccentricr has extended throughit a studscrew @20, whichenters a threaded hole 25X in the bar or rod 59, the turning in of said screw confining the eccentric in its adjusted position in said block. By adjusting. the eccentric about said screw in said block the block4 is made to occupy a position moreor less distant from the fulcrum 015 of said cam 0M, and the extent of movement of the cam-shapedend of the bar may thereby .be exactly adjusted.
The bar 59 has (see Fig. 2) a screw flo standing ina threaded hole fm, said screw being extended therefrom between two like gibs f, said gibs being' secured adjustably to ears of they circularly-moving block 48 by'suitable screws fis, the heads of said screws entering counterbored holes in said gibs, the screws and their headsbeing smaller than the holes and counterbored portions, (see Fig. l12,) so that the gibs may be adjusted one toward the other when said screws .are loosened to compensate for any wear between said screw flo and the said gibs. Thescrew flo in the descent of the bar 59 acts on one end f14 of, a take-up or thread-controller, shown as a lever f15, pivoted on a stud-screw fm, inserted in an ear of the circularly-moving block 48, one'arm of .said lever being acted upon by a spring fn, said spring moving the said lever as the bar rises.' lThis lever f15 cooperates with the under or second thread between the tension device SOand the under-thread guide 81and as the under-thread carrier. rises it takes up the slack thread which would be formed by that movement, the lever f15 by holdingnthe under` thread preventing the looper fromengaging said under thread as thef looper moves backwardly. The movement of the lever f15 by the spring ceases before the needle 5l or under-thread carrier completes its ascent, and said`lever fl5 remains substantially stationary until the un'- der-thread carrier arrives with yits eye in or below the work, when said lever is moved by the'screw f1 to thus hold the thread under a uniform strain. The extent of movement of the vlever f15 by or through ,the spring f1? is limited by an adjustable stop fio. j
In` the machine herein described it will be understood that the revoluble bloclrcontaining the under-thread-carrying needle and the looper is rotated a little more than fora complete rotation during the production of each but-tonhole, and this rotation of the block was provided for in United States Patent No.
498,216; but therein the level` actuated by the rod fo was connected by a pin-joint with one side of asleeve fitted upon the. lower end of the rod 59;/but such connection in practice has been found objectionable, for. the reason that the movement of the end of the lever in the arc of a circle produces unequal strains upon the rod'59, causing its bearings to be rapidly worn, and consequently I have aimed to provide means whereby the rod fi may'ube made more durable and whereby the wear between itself and its bearings in the rotatable block may be reduced to a minimum and also in case of wear that I may compensate for the same by adjustment of parts. I effect this purpose by providing the bar 59 with the .ball @22 and fitting upon said ball the cup-shaped washers L23 and @24, and
doublefork the lever (L27 at its endcontiguous to said rod that the vertical notch of the lever might span the rod, the horizontal notch forming seats for the larger bases of the washers @22 and a2, and to provide for any wear between the washers and the ball I provide the forked end of said lever with an adjusting-screw w10. (See Fig. 1.)
Having fully described .my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A sewing-machine comprising a rectilinearly-reciprocating needle, a circularlymoving block having a raceway inclined with respect tothe path of movement of said needle, means to rotate said block, a needle-carrier located in said raceway and provided with an under-thread-carrying needle, a lever mounted u'pon the circularly-moviug block and `vibrating in a plane parallel to the plane of inclination of the raceway, means to connect said lever with said needle-carrier, a rod orbar, means to move it in a path parallel to that of the rectilinearly-reciprocating needle, and means to connect said lever and rod or bar, whereby the movement of said rod or bar effects the movements of the to without binding.
2. A sewingmachine comprising in combination, a circularly-moving block having a raceway, a needle-carrier movable therein and provided with an under-thread-carrying needle, a lever, means to connect it with said needle-carrier, said lever having at one end a laterally-extended hollow arm slotted at its side, a slide fitted loosely in said hollow arm, a vertically-reciprocating bar, and a pin connecting said bar and slide; combined with means to move said bar to vibrate said lever and actuate said under-thread-carrying needle, substantially as described.
3. A sewing-machine comprising in combination, the following instrumentalities, viz: a circularlymoving block having a raceway, a needle-carrier guided by said raceway, an under-thread-carrying needle mounted on said carrier, a lever having at one end a laterally-extended arm, a slide connected loosely with said extended arm, means to connect IOO parts referred said level' with said needle carrier, a rod mounted in said circularly-moving block and provided with a ball-shaped projection, means to connect said rod with said slide, a lever having ears to embrace loosely the ball of said rod, means to move said lever to reciprocate said rod in said block, and devices to insure the rotation of said rod in unison with said block.
l. A sewing-machine comprising in combination, a circularly-moving block, means to lnove it, a raceway carried by said block, a needle-carrier coperating with said raceway and provided With an under-thread-carrying needle, a pivoted lever having at one end an extended arm, an adjustable eccentric forming the pivot for said lever, means to connect said lever to said carrier, a vertically-reciproeating bar, and means to connect it loosely and operatively with the arm of said lever, substantially as described.
5. A sewing-machine comprising in combination, a circularly-moving block, means to actuate it, a raceway in said block, a needlecarrier fitted to slide in said raceway and provided with an under-thread-carrying needle, a pivoted lever having at one end an extended arm and provided with an ear, a guide connected with said block to guide said ear in the movement of said lever, means to con-4 nect said lever with said carrier, a rod, means to actuate it, a slide cooperating loosely with the extended arm of said lever, and means to connect said slide with said rod whereby the reciprocations of said rod effect the movement of said lever about its pivot, substantially as described.
6. In a sewing-machine, the following instru mentalities,viz: areciprocatingeye-pointed thread-carrying needle to penetrate the material,means to operate it, a circularly-moving block, a looper cooperating with said needle, a looper-carrier composed of a body part, a cam part, and a swiveled part to which said looper is attached, means to move said loopercarrier, and means comprising a wing, a rockshaft, and a suitable cam to move said rockshaft to turn the swiveled partof said loopercarrier on its body part.
'7. In a sewing-machine, the following instrumentalities, viz: an eye-pointed threadcarrying needle to penetrate the material, means to actuate it, a looper, a looper-carrier composed of a body part and a swiveled part mounted thereon, means to sustain and actuate said body part, a pin or stud connecting the swiveled part with the body part loosely, a Wing, and a rock-shaft to which said wing is attached; combined with means to move said rock-shaft and cause said wing to turn the swiveled part of said looper-carrier on said body part, substantially as described.
8. A sewing-machine comprising in combination, the following instrumentalities, viz: a circularly-moving block, a looper-carrier r l l l detachable cam-slotted part, the said swiveled part having attached to it a looper, and a stud to support said body part, combined with a vertically-reciprocating rod or bar having a stud to enter said cam-slotted part, and means to move said rod or bar vertically to turn said looper-carrier about its pivot, and means to vibrate the swiveled part ofsaid carrier on said body part, substantially as described.
9. A sewing-machine comprising in combination a looper-carrier, means to support and actuate it, said carrier being composed of a body part and a swiveled part mounted thereou, a looper held by said swiveled part, and a rock-shaft having a wing and a projection; combined with a cam to act ou the projection of said rock-shaft to turn it, a reciprocating bar or rod, meansto actuate the same, and connections between said bar or rod and said cam to enable the latter to be moved with and by said rofl or bar, substantially as described.
l0. A sewing-machine comprising` in combination, the following instrumentalities,viz: a circularly-moving block, a looper-carrier composed of a body part, a swiveled part mounted thereon, said swiveled part having a looper, a wing to move said swiveled part, means lo sustain said wing, a slotted wing-actuating cam, having one of its ends pivoted to said block, a block entering the slot in said cam, an eccentric to sustain said block, a rod or bar fitted loosely in said circularly-moving block, means carried by said rod or bar to sustain said eccentric to said rod, the adjustment of said eccentric regulating the throw of said wing and consequently timing the movement of the looper.
ll. A sewing-machine comprising in combination, a circularly-moving block, a bar mounted therein provided with a diagonallyplaced stud, means to reciprocate said bar, an under-thread-carrying needle, and a carrier therefor, combined with a lever provided with a movable slide engaged by said stud, and connections between said lever and the carrier for said under-thread-carrying needle, substantially as described.
l2. In a machine for stitching buttonholes, an eye-pointed needle, means to move it to penetrate the material, a circularly-movable block located below the material and provided with a raceway and a stud, a needle-carrier in said raceway, an attached under-threadcarrying needle, a lever mounted on said block, and connected operatively with said needle-carrier, means to move said lever, a looper, a looper-carrier composed of a body part mounted on the stud of said block, a swiveled part mounted on the body part, and a cam part attached to said body part; means to actuate said cam part to move said looper in the direction of its length, an independent device carried by said block, and means to move said device in a plane transverse to that composed of a body, a swiveled part, and a in-Which moves the lever for actuating the needle carrrier, said device acting against the swiveled part and tnrningit on the said body part, and means io move said swiveled part in opposition to said device.
13. In a machine for stitching buttonholes, an eye-pointed needle to penetrate the material, means to act-nate the same, a coperating under-thread carrier, means to sustain the said thread-carrier and to actuate the same, a looper, a looper-carrier composed of abody part pivotally mounted on the means sustaining the under-thread carrier, a swiveled part movable on the body part, a cam part connected with said body part; a rod having two pins one entering the cam 'of the cam part, means to move said rod longitudinally, and adevice deriving its movement from the second pin on said rod to meet and turn the swiveled part on the body part.
14. A buttonhole-sewing machine comprising a rotatable block sustaining a needle-carrier having an attached under-thread-carrying needle, a looper-carrier having' an attached looper, a rod located in the axis of rotation'of said block, two slotted levers sustained by said block and connected respectively operatively with said needlecarrier and said looper-carrier, means to reciprocate said rod, and studs carried thereby entering Slots in said levers to move them and actuate said needle-carrier and looper-carrier.
15. Abuttonhole-sewing machine comprising a rotatable block sustaining a needle-carrier having an attached under-thread-carrying needle,aloopercarrier having an attached looper, a rod located in the axis of rotation of said block, two slotted levers sustained by said block and connected respectively operatively with said needle-carrier and said loopercarrier, means to reciprocate said rod, studs carried thereby entering slots in said levers to move them and actuate said needle-carrier and looper-carrier, and means also carried by said block to move a part of the looper-carrier laterally as described when making a stitch.
16. A buttonhole-sewing machine comprisin gin combination,a rotatable block provided with an under-thread-carrying needle, a rod located in the axis of rotation of said block, said rod being provided near its lower end with a ball, and a pivoted lever cross-forked at its end to embrace said rod and reciprocate it in said block.
17. A buttonhole-sewing machine comprisingin combination,a rotatable block provided with an under-thread-carrying needle, a rod located in the axis of rotation of said block, said rod being provided near its lower end with a ball, suitable cup-shaped-washers embracing said ball, a pivoted lever cross-forked at its end to embrace said rod and act upon said washers, and means to reciprocate said lever to reciprocate said rod in said block.
18. A buttonhole-sewng machine comprising in combination,arotatable block provided with an under-thread-carrying needle, a rod located in the axis of rotation of said block, said rod being provided near its lower end with a ball, suitable cup-shaped washers embracing said ball, a pivoted lever cross-forked at its end to embrace said rod and act upon said Washers, means to reciprocate said lever to reciprocate said rod in said block, and adjusting means to adjust the lever to compensate for any wear between the disks and the ball of the said rod.
19. A buttonhole-sewing machine comprising in combination a rotatable block and means for rotating the same, lower complemental stitch-forming mechanism located on said block, a rod located in line with the axis of rotation of-said block, connections between said rod and said lower complemental stitch- 'formingmechanism for operating the same, a ball connected with said rod, washers cooperating with said ball, and means acting upon said Washers to reciprocate said rod during the period of rotation of the block and while the stitching of the buttonhole is being carried on and completed.
20. In a buttonhole-sewing machine comprisin g in combination, a rotatable block containing a looper-carrier composed of a body, and a block swiveled on said body and provided with a looper, a stud projecting from one end of said swiveled block, a wing, a rock-shaft carrying said wing, and means to move said rock-shaft to cause the Wing carried thereby to periodically contact with the said stud and thus turn the swiveled part of the looper-carrier on the body part thereof.
