Be it known that I, GEORGE A. Morenas, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Providence and State of Rhode Islandhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Saddles,`ot` which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a bicycle-saddle having' three independent pads formingaseat, one of which pads is rigidly secured to the saddletree, and means mounted ou the saddletree for giving lateral adjustment to the other two pads; and the object ot my invention is to provide a saddle which shall readily yield to the'movements of the rider in the manner as hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out iu the claims.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents a ltop plan view of the saddle and showing the pommel extended in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an inverted View of the saddle. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the saddle, taken in line x x of Fig. l. Fig. e is a rear elevation view ofthe saddle. Fig. 5 is a top plan View of the saddletree as provided with means for giving adjustment toY the seat-pads proper. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal central sectional View ot one of the seatpads.

Referring to Fig. l, A represents the pom- I mel-pad, and A A. two movable pads which form the seat proper, and each of the three pads are constructed of yielding material and mounted upon the saddletree in'the manner 5o p of the saddle-post.

B represents the saddletree yas cast in one piece and adapted to extend in a horizontal position across the saddle-post, having a centrally-downward portion c, provided with a circular opening c', longitudinally disposed to receive the projecting arm p of the saddlepost, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the said portion c of the saddletree is further provided with two screw-threaded openings, transverse of the opening c', to receive clamping-bolts d d, which bolts hold the saddletree rmly in position upon the said arm Each end portion of the saddletree turns upward, so as to form ears c2 c2, with an extension projecting outwardly from each of said ears, as c3 c3, and each of the ears is provided with'a circular opening of the same size and opposite to each other at a point c4 c4 to receive a bolt O, Which is provided with a right and left handscreW-threaded portions, as at e e. This bolt extends parallel with the saddletree and is made to rotate in the same plane thereon by the circular collar e', which is made secure to the said boltl by'la pin e2, having its peripheral edge to tit within a groove e3 of the saddlctree.
A represents .the pommel-pad, which consists of an inner layer of felt f and covered by two pieces of thin leather, asf and f2, re-v spectively, both of which pieces are stitched together at the bottom edge of said feltf, as at a point g, and this pad is mounted upona metallic arm D, having a projecting flange h to surround the side of the said pad, and the both members A and D are secured together by the screw-bolts "i c', which engage with nuls placed between the vbottom layer of leather f2 and layer of felt f, respectively, iu the manner as shown in Fig. 3. .Thearm D projects rearwardly from the said pad A and terminates ina downward portion j, which portion has its opposite sides beveled outwardly to tit vwithin a dovetailed central portion't of the saddletree, as seen in Fig. 5, and the arm D is rigidly secured to the saddletree by a screw Z, which is made to enter the doveiailed portion of the same.
The pads A' A', which form the seat proper, are each of a circular form and constructed somewhat similar to the pommel-pad A,With the exception that a centrally-circular recess 4m is provided to extend lpartially through the Each of the holders `o 0 has al centrally-proj ecting ear h', provided with a screw-threaded opening 71.2(see Fig. 6) to engage upon either end of the screw-threaded portions of the bolt C,and which bolt by turning the collar e moves the said pads to the position required by the ICO ` cup-holders o 0.

E is a Hat cross-bar centrally mounted upon a bolt q, which is made to enter a screwthreaded opening formed in the pommel-arln D. Said cross-bar is loosely mounted on this bolt and is provided with an elongated slot near each extremity, as r r, and through which slots bolts qq/ project and enter screwthreaded openings formed in the bottom ofthe The function of the crossbar Eis to permit of more or less forward swing of the pads A' A', and this adjustment is obtained by simply unscrewing the bolts q and q q a trifle, which allows the cross-bar to drop to the position as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and each alternate movement of the rider when seated causes the cross-bar E to tilt, and which bar permits of greater forward swing of the pads, as shown by dotted lines in said Fig. 3. It will be readily understood that by my construction this saddle contains in itself all that is necessary to allow of quick lateral adjustment in bringing the centers of the rear pads directly under the position of the pelvisbones and at the same time by having the said pads mounted as described allows the pads to swing with the movements of the rider.
Having described my invention, what I claim isvl. In a bicycle-saddle, the combination, of a saddletree, made in one piece of metal adapted to extend transversely across the saddle-post, having an ear projecting upwardly near each extremityv thereof, each of which ears is provided with an opening opposite to each other, and an outer extension from the upper portion of each of said ears, and parallel with the openings of the same, said saddletree being also provided with a central transverse groove, a bolt mounted in the ears end thereof, a circular collar rigidly secured upon the central portion of said bolt and made to t in the said groove of the saddletree, two circular pads made of yielding material, as described, metallic holders for said pads each having a projecting ear provided With a transverse screw-threaded opening to receive the threaded portion of said bolt, a pommel-arm rigidly secured to the said saddletree, with means secured upon said arm for permitting limited forward swing to the said pads, as shown and described.
2. In a bicycle-saddle, the combination, of asaddletree cast in one piece and adapted to extend transversely across the saddle-post, centrally secured thereon and having vertical ears near each extremity thereof, each of said ears provided with a circular opening opposite to each other, and an extension from each of said ears of the saddletree, said saddletree being also providedwith a central transverse groove, a bolt mounted in the openings of the ears of said saddletree and provided with right and left hand screw-threaded portions, a circular collar rigidly secured centrally of the said bolt and adapted to rotate in the groove of said saddletree, two metallic cupshaped holders each having a centrally-projecting ear provided with a screw-threaded opening to engage the threaded portion of said bolt, a yielding pad secured in each of the said holders, a centrally-projecting pommel-arm rigidly secured to the said saddletree and provided With a yielding pad, a screw-threaded bolt in said arm, a cross-bar loosely mounted on said bolt and provided with a slotted opening near each extremity thereof, with a screw-threaded bolt in each of the openings of said cross-bar to engage in the bottom of said holders, as shown and described.
