Be it known that I, JosEPH J. CortrER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bowerston, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Padlock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in padlocks; and the particular object of the invention is to provide a lock-casing so constructed as to prevent the entrance of water, thus obviating any danger of ice forming in the lock in cold weather, which would intertote with the working of the parts; and another object is to provide in the lock mechanism an auxiliary locking-dog for the tumblers.

I will describe a padlock embodying my invention and then point out the 'novel features in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is an interior view of the lock, showing it in locked position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, but showing the look as open. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the lock, and Fig. i is an edge view with the beep removed.

The lock-casing comprises opposite side walls 1 and 2, connected together at one edge by a wall 3 and at the opposite edge by a wall 4, which, as here shown, is arranged inward of the edges of the opposite walls 1 and 2, forming a recess in which the hasp 5 operates, the said hasp being pivoted at its lower end on a pin 6. The walls 3 and 4 are connected at the upper end by means of a top edge wall 7, and at the conjunction of the walls 3 and 7 a recess 8 is provided to receive the tongue 9 on the end of the hasp. The hasp 5 is provided with an inwardly-extended finger 10, which forms a latch the hook end of which is designed to engage with a series of tumblers -11, mounted on a pivot 12 and operated by a suitable key passed through the keyhole 13 in the bottom of the The several tumblers are held yieldingly in place by means of springs 14:, and when the hasp 5 is released it is forced outward by means of a spring 15, which engages erial No. 60,718. In connection with the tumblers I provide an auxiliary locking device for the tumblers, consisting of a pivoted dog 16, pressed yield ingly upon the tumblers by means of a spring 17. On its under side this dog 16 has a rib 18 for engaging with the upper'edges of the tumblers.

All of the tumblers except one are provided with hooks 19, and if any tumbler thus provided with a hook is moved beyond a certain limit the book 19 passes over the free end of the dog 16, thus holding the dog securely down, and thereby preventing the disengagement of the other tumblers from the lockingfinger. Any one of the tumblers provided with a hook can therefore prevent the disengagement of all the other tumblers. This feature is to prevent picking the lockthat is to say, when a false key is inserted it will almost certainly strike some one of the tumblers provided with a hook and cause the engagement of said hook upon the dog 16. This will occur with every key unless the same is so formed as to engage the tumblers in .the'or der desired.

To open the lock, it is only necessary to insert the key through the opening 13 and press it against the several tumblers, which will be swung upon the pivot 12 and released from the hook end of the finger l0.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A padlock-casing, comprising the oppo site side walls, the opposite edge walls, one of said edge walls being arranged inward of the edges of the side walls and having an opening below the upper end, a hasp pivoted between the side walls below said opening, a latch-finger on said hasp adapted to pass through said opening, and a top edge wall connect ing with the opposite side edge walls, substan= tially as specified.

2. A waterproof lock, comprising a hollow casing provided exteriorly with waterproof concaved recesses, and also provided with an 1 aperture, a movable hasp provided with terminals engaging said waterproof ooncaved recesses, a locking-finger located 111136111106.h-

ate of said terminals and extending through said aperture into said casing so as to form a water-tight engagement therewith, said locking-finger being provided with an enlargement for preventing its Withdrawal from said casing, and means, controllable bya key, for securing said locking-finger in a definite position relative to said casing.

3. A waterproof lock, comprising a waterproof casing, a hasp provided with a lockingfinger integral therewith, said hasp being pivoted at the bottom of said casing and said locking-finger entering the side thereof and provided with a lug inside of said casing, a dog pivoted inside of said casing, and a series of tumblers some of which are provided with oppositely-disposed hooks to engage, respectively, said dog and said lug upon said locking-finger.

4. A look, comprising a casing, a hasp provided with a locking-finger, aplurality of tumblers provided with shoulders, and a dog provided with a flat face and a transverse rib for engaging different surfaces of said tumblers.

5. A lock, comprising a casing, a hasp provided with a locking-finger, apluralityof tun1- blers provided with edges disposed at different angles and with shoulders, and a dog provided with a flat face and a transverse rib for engaging said edges respectively.
