Be it known t-hat I, JAMES T. SARGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented or discovered certain new and useful'lmprovements in Washboards,'of

which improvements the following isa speciication.

The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in washboards, andhas for its object a construction whereby suitable cushioning-supports are provided for the rub-` bing-face, thereby rendering it possible to use,V rubbing-faces formed of vitreous material.

Theinvention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed. 1

In the practice of my invention the Washboard-frame is formed, as shown, by the legs 1, cross-pieces' 2 and 3, brand-board 4, and top bar 5, said parts being constructed in the usual or any suitable manner, except in so far as may be hereinafter stated.` The legs and cross-bars are grooved or recessed to form supporting-seats for the rubbing-face. The rubbing-face 6 may be formed of glass or clay having a vitreous coating, so as to produce a ysmooth even surface. Strips 7, preferably grooved for the reception of the edges of the rubbing-face, are secured to two or more edges of the rubbing=face. These sections or strips are secured in position in any suitable manner, but preferably by means of a wire, whichin the construction shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3 is so bent at its middle portion as to form a loop 8,'which will secure the strips in position at the corners of the rubbing-face. As shown in said figures, the wires after being bent to form the binding or securing loop have their end portions passed in opposite ldirectionthrough openings in the strips,thereby forming aclosed binding-loop.

While cushions of any'suitable form or con- 55 struction may be interposedV between the sup- :plementalstrips and thesretaining-seats in the mainframe, it :is preferred to form said cushions by suitably bending the end portions 9'of the Wires, whereby the strips are 6o secured in position.

As shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the end portions V9 ofthe wires after passing through the holes in the strips are bowed or bent so that the extremities of the bowed or bent portions ywill bear upon the sides ofthe strips, while the wires 10 through the overlapped ends, 75

thereby pinning such ends together. The cushions are formed by suitably bending or bowing the end portions of the'wires lO so that the extremities of the bent or bowed portermediate portions will have a bearing on the seats in the main frame. This construction will permit of considerable rough handling of the washboardwithout injury to the tions will bear upon the strips, while the in-l 8o rubbing-face, and the latter will not be liable 8 5 to injuryfroin the` warping or twisting of the legs when the board is in use.

I claim herein as my invention- 1. A washbroard having in combination a frangible rubbing-face, supplementary strips go having seats for the edge of the rubbing-face, seats in the Vmain frame for the supplementary strips, and cushions interposed at suitable points between the main-frame seats and the supplemehtal strips, substantially as set forth.

2. A washboard having in combination a main frame with seats cut therein for the re; ception of the edge-supporting strips ofthe rubbing-face, a frangible rubbing-face, suproo plementary strips having seats cut therein for the reception of the edges of the rub'- rubbing-face, the end portions of said Wire loops being bent to form cushions between the strips and the seats in the legs and crossbars, substantially as set forth.
