TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONOERN:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. WALTON, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an improved Mattress or Cushion; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of a mattress or cushion in which shavings, chips, or other particles of red cedar wood are introduced into and among the usual stufling material, for the purpose of preventing the -ravages of insects, and at the same time reducing the cost of the mattress or-cushion. I
In order to enable others to make my invention, I will now proceed to describe the mode of, constructing the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which the drawing represents a sectional perspective vview of my improved mattress.
A is the outer fabric of the mattress, containing ordinary curl hair or other elastic stufling, within which is embedded a fiat bag, B, containing shavings or chips of cedar, the proportion of stufiin'g to the shavings being, in the present instance, about two-thirds of the former to one of the latter, but other. proportions may be used providing the elasticity of the'mattress is not impaired by the use of too large a mass of the shavings.
Heretoi'ore, the great objection to mattresses stuffed with hair and other material has been the difliculty experienced in keeping them free from insects; the latter, and especially moths, cutting the hair into small fragments, thereby destroying its elasticity, and causing it to become more or less matted. This objection is obviated by my invention, the advantages of which are twofoldi in the first place, the mattress is fie Lfrgm all insects, as the pe culiar odo r of the cedar shavings is o i:fen siv e tg;them.; and, secondly, the shavings are" partially elastic, and are much cheaper than curled hair, so that when they are employed in connection with the latter the cost of the mattress is reduced. If it be desired, the shavings, instead of being put into a separate bag, may be mixed with the hair, the result being the some;
I claim as my invention, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent A mattress or cushion containing curled hair or other equivalent elastic stuiiing material, combined with shavings or chips of cedar, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
B. F. WALTON.
