. UNITED STATES l PATENT -OFFICE.
ALEXANDER BOLLER, OF YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW ATTACl-lMENT FORVPROTAECTI'NGV FOOD,
SPECIFICATION: forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,224, dated February 11, 1902.
Application filed May 20, 1901. Serial No. 61,055.. (No model-l T0 at? whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER BoLLER, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, haveinvented a new'and Improved Window Attachment for Protecting Food, of which the following is a full,,clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a folding box for windows capable of being closed up flat, so as to occupy a minimum amount ofroom in storage, which box is provided with self-adjusting fastening devices for attachment to a window-frame, and to so construct the box' that it may be adapted to windows of different sizes.
A further purpose of the invention is to so construct the box that its upper lid or roof can be raised or lowered, to permit cleaning of the window-panes of the upper. and lower sashes of the Window, and the lower member adj usted, enabling the window-sill and the bottom at the box to be thoroughly cleaned. Another purpose of the invention is to provide for an adjustment of the sides. of the box without disturbing the bottom of thebox and to preserve the bottom level, although the sill of the window-frame may be slanting.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide a window-box which rests upon the sill and is attached to the sides of the windowframe for the purpose of protecting food, &c.
from exposure to the weather and from dust from articles shaken above the window to which the device is applied, and which may/ be used as a cooler for food-stuffs.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the im- 7 proved attachment viewed from the inside of a room, the window-frame to which it is attached being shown in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the improved attachment folded. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4=is a detail view illustrating the manner in which the clamps of the attachment adapted for engagement with the window-frame areapplied thereto and engage with the outer stop-bead'of the window-frame.
-A represents awindow frame or casing, B a Window-sash, and O the outerstOp-bead for the window frame or casing.
The attachment may be. made of any suitits construction a-front plate or panel '10 is employed, of any desired height and of a' length practically corresponding to the width of an ordinary window. A bottom plate or member 1 1 is hinged to the bottom edge of the front plate or panel 10, which bottom "is of greater width than the bottom plate 11.
Two side sections or membersl are pro- These side sections 14.- are straight at their bottom edges and arepreferably given an upwardand inward inclination .at their upper edges,-so that the top panel 13, adapted to be supported by the end sections, is given the same inclination as'is shown in Figs. 1 and 3,.
Recesses 16 are made in the bottom edges of the side sections 14 at the front, and these recesses when the article is set up receive the outer longitudinalportion of the sill 17 of the window-frame, as shown'in Fig. 3. Vertical sleeves 18 are formed at the inner edges of the side sections 14, and in thesesleeves strengthening-rods 19 are closely fitted. Near the upper edge of the sleeve 18 of each side section 14 a recess is cut, exposing the strength ening-rods 19, and at these exposed portions of the rods clamps 21 are pivoted upo'nflthe rods at the junction of their meeting memposing jaw with a spur 23, said spurs and set.- screws being adapted to engage with opposite sides of the said stop-beads O, as shown in Fig. 4.. It will be observed that since the 'bers, as shown in'Fig. '4. These clampsare adapted to receive the outside stop-beadsG between their jaws, and onejaw of each clamp is provided with a set-screw 22 and the op 'r'o'o 6o able material, metal being preferred, and in 7s vided, having a hinge connection 15-with the end portions of the front panel or plate 10.'
clamps are pivoted they may be readily brought to a position to engage with the stopbeads 0 when the end sections are adjusted, and when the article is folded up they lie fiat upon the outer faces of the end sect-ions, as shown in Fig. 2.
Adjustment of the side sections without uncovering the top of the set-up article is socured by hinging inwardly-extending segmental wings 24 to the top edges of said side sections, which wings when the article is set up engage with the under face of the top panel 13, as shown in Fig. l, and when the wings thus engage they are held in position by buttons 25, carried by the top panel, as is shown in the same view. It will thus be observed that the side sections may be moved outward or inward for adjusting the article to different sizes of window-frames without uncovering the top of the article or taking the wings out of the range of the buttons 25, that when the article is set up and attached to a window a protective box is formed for food, &c., which adjustment may be made without detachment from the window frame, and that the members of the box may be manipulated in a manner which will admit of the glass and the sills of the window being readily and thoroughly cleaned.
If desired, the box may be provided with an intermediate shelf 26, hinged to the front panel, as shown in Fig. 1, and supported in horizontal position by brackets 27 or their equivalents, attached to the side sections 14.
When the article is not required, the side sections are moved outward in opposite directions, the bottom plate is folded up upon the front plate, and the top plate is then folded down upon the bottom plate. The wings are next folded upon the side sections, and the side sections are carried inward and folded upon the top section or panel, as shown in Fig. 2, it being understood that when an intermediate shelf 26 is employed it is also folded upon the front plate or panel.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A protective box for food, comprisinga front panel, top and bottom panels hinged to corresponding edges of the front panel, and side panels also hinged to the front panel at the ends thereof, whereby the side panels may be adjusted to accommodate the article to window-frames of different sizes, and clamps carried by the side sections, adapted for enably holding the wings in the said position,
and clamps carried by the inner portions of the side sections and adapted forattachment to extensions from a window-frame, as set forth.
3. In a protective box for food, (he, the combination, with a front panel, a bottom panel and a top panel, the bottom and top panels being hinged respectively to the bottom and top edges of the front panel, of side panels -hinged to the ends of the front panel, the said side panels being of greater width than the width of the bottom panel, each side panel being provided with a recess in its bottom at its forward edge, segmental Wings pivoted to the upper edges of the said panels and arranged for engagement with the under face of the top panel, buttons pivoted to the top panel, engaging with the said wings, and clamps pivotally attached to the inner edges of the side panels, said clamps being adapted for engagement with extensions from a window-frame, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALEXANDER ROLLER.
