Be itknown that LTHEODORE K. HAsTINGs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Passe-Partouts, of which the following is a specification.

A passe-partout as usually constructed is a picture and mat framed with a glass and edgebinding complete in itself as the most inexpensive article of this class for sale and decoration, and the same is not adapted to be altered or separated.

My invention is a new article of manufacture, and in carrying out the same the passepartout is prepared as an article of sale complete and ready to receive a picture placed upon a lling-board provided for that purpose, after which a sheet of paper attached along one edge is to be pasted down to complete the frameor passe-partout.

In the drawings, Figure l is a rear perspective view illustrating my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section in larger size.

The glass a and mat b agree in size and may be of any desired surface dimensions. The mat is provided with a picture-openi11g,which may also be of any desired dimensions proportionate with the mat and glass. -The backing-card CZ also agrees in size with the mat and glass, and the same is preferably pasted down upon the back of the mat. This backing-card is provided with an opening larger than the opening in the mat, and into which the card c, preferably of the same thickness, its. In fact, this card c may be cut directly from the backing-card d.

The picture to be shown in the passe-partout is preferably pasted upon one surface of the card c. The glass a, mat o, and backingcard d are connected by a binding e, extending entirely around the edges of the respective parts, said binding extending a short distance over the surface of the glass and over the surface of the backing-card CZ.

I employ a paper sheet f, pasted along one edge upon the binding and the backing-card. The loose edges of this paper sheet on the under surface are preferably provided With adhesive material at f as shown by the parallel lines. As an article of manufacture and for sale the device is provided, as described,

with the card o for the picture, fitting and loose within the opening of the backing-card d, and the paper strip f, simply secured along one edge, as shown in Fig. l. The person purchasing the same for use and for exhibiting a picture preferably pastes the picture on one face of the filling-card c, lays the card in the opening in the backing-card d, so that the picture will show in the opening in the mat, and then moistens the adhesive material upon the under surface of the paper backing-sheet f or applies paste to the edges and pastes the same down upon the backing-card d and binding-strip e, so as to inclose and hold the picture and the card c in place in the passepartout.

I may attach to the back of the passe-partout one or more rings g, by which the same may be suspended from a nail or picture-wire upon the wall.

I claim as my inventionl. As anew article of manufacture, apassepartout comprising a glass, a mat with a picture-opening, a backing-card with an opening larger lthan the opening in thermat, an `edge-bindin g connecting said parts together,

a card adapted to fit Within the opening in the backing-card and upon which the picture to be exhibited may be pasted, and a paper sheet secured along one edgeto the backingcard and adapted to be pasted down upon the backing-card after the insertion of the picture, substantially as set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a passepartout comprising a glass, a mat with a picture-opening, a backing-card with an opening larger than the opening in the mat, an edge-binding connecting said parts together, a card adapted to fit Within the opening in the backing-card and upon which the picture to be exhibited may be pasted, and a paper backing-sheet secured alongone edge to the backing-card andhaving adhesive material upon its free under edges and adapted to be pasted down upon the backing-card after the insertion of the picture, substantially as set forth.
