Be it known that I, JOHN HESS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Milwaukee, in the countyof Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Method of Manufacturing Lace-Paper Pail Covers or Circulars, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved method of forming lace-paper or similar articles, and particularly to an improved method of forming lace-paper covers or circulars to be used for covering the contents of pails.

It is customary for the manufacturers and dealers in candy and some other wares to place a cover or circular on top of the contents in the pails in which the articles are sold or exhibited. It is now customary for these manufacturers or dealers to use lacepaper covers or circulars, and it is not only desirable but necessary in order to obtain the desired effect to have these covers closely fit the pails. As the pails are of various sizes, it has heretofore been necessary for the manufacturers of the lace-paper covers to make a die for every size of pail in order that each size of pail should have a coverof a complete design. Owing to the fact that each size pail necessitated a separate die for cutting or embossing the lace paper the profits of the lace-paper manufacturers were greatly reduced.

The object of the present invention is to do away with the necessity of having a separate die for each size of pail and to produce a cover or circular of a peculiar form or having certain characteristics, so that the manufacturer of the lace paper may by means of one die produce covers or circulars which are in themselves complete, but from which smaller covers or circulars may be cut, and so that each size which is cut will. embody and be a complete design in itself.

It is necessary that the outer edge of these covers or circulars should be strong and tough, and this is best accomplished by having the outer edge formed of substantially blank paper or paperonly slightlyembossed.

In order to accomplish these objects, I have produced and here illustrate in the accompanying drawings a pail cover or circular formed of lace paperhaving a central portion or complete design 1, surrounded by a substantially blank portion 2, which in turn is surrounded bya lace portion 3, which, with the portion 1, forms a complete design. The .portion 3 in turn issurrounded bya substantially blank portion 4, and around this lies another portion 5, provided with a. blank outer edge 6. It will be noticed that if the outer edge 6 were entire and if the portion lying between theouter edge and the center design or portion were en tire the whole cover or circular would be a complete design.

The dotted lines 7, 8, and 9 illustrate lines of cutting, and it will be noticed that if a cover or circular were out from the cover bounded by the edge 6 on one of the lines 7, 8, or 9 the remaining or smaller cover would be a complete design in itself.

It will be understood that covers may be cut from covers of the largest size-those bounded by the edge 6-and that the outer edge of each may fall. anywhere within either of the substantially blank portions 2 or L. It will be noticed that these blank portions may be increased in number and may be narrower and that the lace portions interposed between them, such as 8, may be increased in number and may be narrower without departing from the spirit of my invention. The design of the center portion, as well as the designs of the interposed lace portions, may be varied.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The method of manufacturing lace-paper or similar articles of several dimensions of substantially the same design from one die, which consists in cutting from a blank of paper or similar material an article of a given size Whose design is provided with intermediate and substantially blank portions extending therearonnd, and of cutting from said article a smaller article whose edge will fall Within one of said intermediate portions, substantially as described.

The method of manufacturing lace-paper covers or circulars or similar articles of several sizes and of substantially the same design by means of one die, which consists in cutting from a blank an article of a given size provided with intermediate substantially blank portions extending parallel to the outer edge thereof, and of cutting from said article a smaller article whose outer edge will fall entirely within one of said intermediate portions, substantially as described.

The method of manufacturing lace-paper covers or similar articles of several sizes having the same center design from one die, which consists in cutting from a blank of pa per or similar material an article of a given size the design of which is provided with intermediate substantially blank portions extending therearound parallel to the outer edge thereof, and of cutting from said article an article the outer edge of which will fall within one of said intermediate portions, substantially as described.

4; The method of manufacturing pail covers or circulars of several sizes and of the same general design from paper orsimilar material, by means of one die, which consists in cutting from a blank an article of a given size whose design is provided with one or more substantially blank portions extending therearound parallel to the outer edge thereof, and of cut ting from said article a smaller article whose outer edge will fall entirely within one of said tially the same general design, from paper or similar material, by means of one die, which consists in cutting a doily of a given size whose design is provided with one or more intermediate substantially blank portions extending therearound parallel to the outer edge thereof, and of cutting from said doily a smaller doily whose outer edge will fall within or on the edge of one of said substantially blank portions, substantially as described.

6. As a new article of manufacture, a lace or embossed pail-cover or similar article formed of paper or similar material, having a complete center design and one or more substantially blank portions extending therearound between said design and the outer edge of said article interposed by a lace or embossed portion, all formed for the purpose of allowing a smaller article having a complete design to be cut therefrom, the outer edge of which will fall within or on the edge of one of said blank portions, substantially as described.
