improvements in corn-harvesters; and the ob-v ject is to provide a device of this character which is adapted to direct, cut, and convey of the device.

Referring to said figures by characters of reference,'1 is a frame of any suitable construction, the top of which is preferably inclined downward and terminates in outwardly-curved ends 2, upon which are secured brackets 3, in which are journaled the lower ends of upwardly-inclined worms-.4, which converge and are journaled'at their upper ends in brackets 5, secured to upwardlyinclined platforms 6, whichextend to points adjacent to the binder. The upper ends of the worms 4 are provided with pinions 7, each of which meshes with a pinion 8, secured to. the upper end of a shaft 9, which has its'lower en'd journaled in the frame 1. One of these shafts 9 is provided with a worm 10, as shown,
.while secured to the opposite shaft is a'beater v in the brackets 5 and within-sleeves 14, adjacent to their opposite ends. Secured to each worm 13 nearthe sleeve is a pinion 15, which meshes with a second pinion 16, mounted upon the platform 6 and engaging with a pinion 17, secured to the upper end of a shaft '18,,suitably journaled within the platform 6 and having a pinion 19 at its lower end, which is adapted to receive motion from a pinion20,

Secured to theframe l and extending from a point below the upper ends of the worms 13 to the side of the device is a platform 26, to the inner side of which is secured afiat strip 27, curved rearward at its outer portion, as shown, and extending over and beyond a plat: 'form 28, fastened to the frame at a point below the plane of the platform 26. At the rear side of the platform 26 is secured a vertical shaft 29,-having curved fingers 30, extending horizontally therefrom to points adjacent to the ends of the strip 27, and this sh aft is suitably 'jour'naled in the frame. Adjacent to the lower end of the vertical shaft 29'is secured a horizontally-extending arm 31, the outer end of which is connected, by means of a rod 32, to a link 33, pivoted to a crank-arm 34, extending from a. shaft 35, mounted in brackets 36, secured to the frame. This shaft is provided at its outer end with a crank-arm 37, and a spring 38 is secured to the frame and encircles the shaft 35, the free end thereof being secured to the crank-arm 34-and holding the same normally in lowered position.

The binding mechanism is of any proper construction. That conventionally indicated comprises a worm a on the driving-shaft 21, which meshes with a horizontallyplaced bevel worm-pinion m on the face of the vertical shaft is, extending up through the hollow standard 29, and on the projecting part above the end of the hollow standard is the knotter-wheel h and the ejector-fingersj, the needle being indicated by the dotted lines 9, Fig. 2, a tongue 2' being secured appropriately to the frame, substantially as indicated.
In operation it will be seen that the stalks will be conducted to the binder by means of the worms 4 and 13. The worm 4 moves in an opposite direction to the worm 13, and they both receive motion from the shaft 21 through shafts 18 and the pinions 15, 16, 17, 19, and 20. The revolution of the shafts 18 will at the same time cause the heaters to rotate toward the binder, and thereby throw the stalks within the worms 13, past the pinions 15, 16, and 17, into engagement with the balance of the worms. The stalks will be delivered from these worms to the binder, and the bundles will be discharged upon the platf0rms26 and 28 between the fingers 30 and the strip 27. When asufficient number of bundles has accumulated upon the platform, the same may be readily discharged to the ground by depressing the crank-arm 37, which will throw the arm 31 outward, turning the shaft 29 within its bearings and swinging the fingers 3O outward and away from the strip 27,when the bundles may be readily removed. When the crank-arm 37 is released, the fingers 30 will be returned to normal position through the force of the spring 38 operating the connections to the vertical shaft.
By means of the worm l0 stalks whit-hare in an inclined position will be raised into engagement with the worms 4, and the beater 11 will throw the stalks from said worms 4 into engagement with the conveyers 13.
The worm l0 and the beater 11 receive their motion from the worms 13 through the gears 12 and 8, said gears also imparting motion to theworms 4.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but Ido not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterabeater on a vertically-inclined shaft to coact with the adjacent worm, substantially as de scribed.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame, of inclined and converging worms journaled thereon, pinions upon saidworms, pinions meshing therewith, downwardly-extending shafts secured to said pinions, a worm upon one of said shafts, parallel inclined worms adapted to impart motion to the pinions of said shafts and means for imparting motion to said worms from a shaft. 7
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame and axle of upwardly-extending shafts adapted to receive motion therefrom, beaters upon said shafts, pinions on the shafts, parallel inclined worms having pinions between their ends engaging said pinions, upwardly-inclined convergent worms, downwardly-extending shafts at the upper ends thereof, a beater upon one of the shafts, a worm upon the second shaft, and means for imparting motion from the parallel worms to said shafts and the converging worms.
4:. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame and an axle of upwardly-inclined converging worms downwardly-extending shafts at the upper ends thereof, a heater clamped upon one of said shafts, a worm upon the second shaft,parallel upwardly-inclined worms, beaters extending downwardly from each of said worms and means for imparting motion from the shaft to each of the heaters and worms, said worms adapted to revolve in opposite directions.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame having worm conveyers and boaters, of a platform thereon, a curved fiat strip at one side thereof, a shaft jou rnaled at one side thereof, fingers projecting from the shaft, an arm thereto, a shaftv journaled within the frame, a crank thereto, a rod connecting said arm and crank, means for holding said crank, and an operatingcrank at the opposite end of the shaft.
