TROWEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 690,839, dated January 7, 1902.
Application filed October 26, 1901. Serial No. 80,099- (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. COYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Homestead, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trowels, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to trowels for bricklayers use; and the object of the same is to construct a trowel which will be strong and heavy enough to use in cutting the hardest brick.
When laying soft red brick, it is the usual practice of workmen to use their trowels for chipping and cutting brick; but when laying light pressed or fire brick this is impossible, as the ordinary trowel is too-light and Wears out very soon. This being the case, every bricklayer provides himself with a double chisel pointed pick, commonly called a scotch, which he uses for cutting brick. This necessity of alternately using two tools results in a great loss of time, which it is the object of my invention to avoid.
The novel construction employed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described ingin a point 3. Formed integral withthe bladel and adjacent to one of the edges 2 is a rib 4, extending above the plane of the blade and beveled off at 5.to the edge 2.
As shown in the'drawings, the trowel is right-handed; but I may construct them with the rib 4 on the opposite edge 2 and thereby make them left-handed. p
A shank 6 is formed integral with the blade 1 and is driven into a handle 7 for use in operating the trowel.
I'donot wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the blade of a trowel nesses.
