Be it known that I, HERVEY DEXTER THATOHER, a citizen of the United States, residingat Potsdam, in the county of St. Lawrence, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Pails, of which the following is a description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to improvements in paper pails of the kind for which I have heretofore been granted Patents No. 553,794, of January 28, 1896, and No. 619,099, of February 7, 1899, these pails being'preferably made of paper or pasteboard and designed for holding butter, milk, lard, oysters, &c., and in general consisting of a pail in shape of the frustum of a cone, the bottom being formed by two circular disks the one smaller than the other, so that when forced downward the outer one will crimp atl the rim of the inner disk, thereby giving a larger surface to be attached by adhesive material tothe wall of the cylinder, being held in place by the wedging action of the cone and the adhesive character of the wax or other adhesive composition used.

The object of the present invention is to provide certain improvements in the manner of reinforcing the pail at its upper edge and in the manner of securing the top thereof in position.

The invention consists, primarily, of a pail of conical shape having at its upper end a reinforcing hoop or band which extends beyond the upper edge of the body of the pail,whe1e by said upper edge of the pail-body forms a rest or ledge for the top or cover, said reinforcing band or hoop being provided with ears or fasteners at the lower edge adapted to be, bent under to engage the lower edge of the reinforcing band or hoop and at the upper end provided with portions adapted to be bent down to engage the band or hoop lof thevv pail and also to hold the cover from displace- 'ment vertically, and also, if desirable, one of the prongs may be perforated for the reception of a bail.

Secondly, the invention consists in an ear for pails constructed as hereinafter set forth.

Finally, the invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and referred to the appended claims. f

' In the drawings, -A represents the body of cured together it will be in the shape of a narrow frustum of a cone, and this reinforcing strip or band B is secured upon the upper edge of the body of the pail A, with its upper edge projecting beyond the upper edge of the pail-body, so that the latter forms a ledge for the reception of the cover C.

D represents the ear or bail-blank, which, as shown in Fig. 4., is substantially triangular in shape, pointed at its lower end, and with its upper end split or die-cut to form four prongs, the outer of which prongs are lettered a and the inner ones b and c, respectively, hthe one, c, being perforated for the reception of a bail, `if desired. This ear is applied by bending over the lower portion, as at d, to engage the lower edge of the reinforcing band or hoop B. The prongs a, are then bent down to engage the upper edge of the reinforcing band or hoop, thus holding the ear in position. If desired, the other prongs b and o may be bent down to hold the cover in place, or only the prong b may be bent down for such purpose andthe prong c be perforated to receive the end of the bail, as shown.

The-reinforcing strip or band is secured to the body of t-he pail in any suitable manner, preferably by adhesive material; but it will be understood that it might be secured by the prongs on the ear, and the pail is made waterproof and grease-proof in any suitable manner.

Various minor modifications and changes in the details of construction of the device may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat# ent, is-

1. As an improved article of manufacture, a paper vessel or pail consisting of a body, a reinforcing strip or band secured at the upper end thereof, its upper edge projecting above the upper edge of the pail or vessel, which thus forms a ledge or seat for a cover, and an ear having prongs secured to the upper and lower edges of the reinforcing band or strip; substantially as described.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a paper vessel or pail consisting of a body, a reinforcing strip or band secured at the upper end thereof, its upper edge projecting above the upper edge of the pail or vessel, which thus forms a ledge or seat for a cover, and an ear having prongs engaging the upper and lower edges of the reinforcing band or strip and prongs engaging the cover to prevent displacement thereof; substantiall'y as described.

8. The combination with a pail and a reinforcing band or strip, ears or fasteners split or die-cut at the upper end, so as to furnish one or more prongs, whereby it may be attached to the band, one or more pron gs adapted to be turned down to hold the cover in place, and one-or more prongs to engage the band at its lower extremity, whereby the ear may be held in place; substantially as described.
