Description

@uitrit faire @anni @fitte I". A. BAL'CH, OF H'INGHAM, WISCONSIN.
Lettere Patent No. 68,831, dated September 17, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN REEL.
To ALL WHoM IT MAY coNoEnn;
Be it known that I, F. A. BALCH, of Hingham, in the county of1 Sheboygan, andState of` Wisconsin, have. invented a new and useful Improvement in Swifts or Reels; and I do hereby declare ,the followingito be a full, clear, and exact description ofI the same, reference being had to the accompanying-drawings,-in which- Figurel is an elevation of my reel, showing the arms fully expanded.
Figure 2 is a plan of the same.
Figure 3 is a plan of the top oi' the sliding-head, showing the wormlthread thereon.
My invention mainly consists in constructing the arms of my reel with parallel bars, so that as the head of each arm is carried to a point more or less near to the central shaft, said head will alway'sicontinue parallel with said' central shaft.
That others may understand ythe construction and mode of operation of this reel,V I will particularly describe it. r i
A is the shaft upon which the reel is mounted. It is provided at its lower end with a clamping device, by which it may be secured to the edge of a table or some other convenient object. The head B is secured to the shaft A, but in such al manner that it may turn freely thereon without rising up or falling down. In the edge of the block B are cut four notches, more or less, and within each ot' said notches are pivoted the armsC D.
At the opposite ends of the arms C D are also pivotecl the windin'g'hlades E E. A line passing through the pivots connecting the arms C Dto the head B is exactly parallel with a similar line passing through the pivots connecting Vsaid arms to thewinding-blade E, so that the effective lengths-ofl the arms C D- are equal, and if the winding-blade is raised up, it will move in the are'ot` a circle, and will constantly maintain its` relative positionto the shaft'A; z'. e., the face of the blade E will. always be parallel with the shaftA, and always in position to receive the strands of yarn to be wound upon it. l p
Below the head B'is `the sliding-head F, which is 'connected to the blades E E by the ods G G, and by it the position of the blades E is determined. That is to say, the blades E may be set at 'a `greater or less distance from the central shaft, and so that a greater or less length o f yarn will be required to pass once around tho reel. Some convenient device may be used to retain the sliding-head F at the desired point.
Aiixed to the shaft A is the toothed wheel H, which turns upon a central pivot in proper bearings. This wheel has a pin projecting from one of its sides, which, once during each revolution, comes in contact with.
some device which will produce a sound, as by raising up a spring, which will make a quick sound when released.
This device is well known and its purpose understood. The wheel H is actuated by the worm-thread I, formed upon the upper side of the head F, and brought in gear with the same when the hea-d is raised to its highest t point, as shown in iig.1. The pin `Ifurnishes a convenient pointof attachment for the endV of the thread before commencing to wind. p 4
It will appear evident that with this reel skeins of large or small length maybe made with equal facility,
as the winding-blades will be always in proper position toreceive the' yarn. l
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1.`The parallel bars C D, to connect the head B and winding-blade E of a rcel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
. 2. The head B and blade E, connected by the parallel bars C and D, substantially asset fortl1,`in comb ina' tion with the sliding-head F and connecting-rods G, for the purpose of retaining thc winding-blades more or less distended, as desired.
I". A; BALCH.
