Letters Palm! No. 68,822, dated September 10, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVEB-SOLES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
TO ALL WHOM I,'J." M.-\Y CONCERN:
130 t known that I, 'Enxusp w. wome of the city of'lvashington, District'of Columbia, have invented :1 new and improved Mode of Attaching Soles to Shoes; and the following is a full and exact tlcscr ip tiou thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referenccmerlted thereon, in, which- I r i i h I Figure l is a. view of a shoe with the sole attached.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the sole, showing in red lines the elastic portion when stretched Figure- 3' is an edge view of the clasp; Figure 4 is a top viewol' the same.
Thcob'ect of m invention is to roride an over-sole, sandal, or crec or which can be instant] attached J y P R .l'
or detached without alteration to. the shoe or the use of any tool.
My invention consists in-uttaching to a. sole, of rubber, leather, or nny other suitable material, an elastic strap and hooked clasp, which, iirconnection with the toe-niece, holds it securely t o thc shoe, but in such s m:umer as that it can beremovctl atplea sure. i
. To' enable others skilled in the arts to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe it-in dctnil. Iconstruct my over-sole A of any suitable material, such as rubber, leather, wood, or metal, to the rear end of which I attach ah elasticstrap, B, in connection with n clasp, G- The best form of role is that shown i in fig; 2, as the toe-piece D and sides'E E prevent dirt or water fromgetting between the soles, and at the same time, in connection with the ehisticlB and clasp C, hold it securely tothe shoe. The clasp 0 should, be of spring metal, and curved, shown in 3, the ends 4: e being bent so as to form hooks.
, To attnch the sole to-u shoe, the' shoe shouldbe inserted men the some as into an ordinary sandal, and then, bytalting hold of the clasp and drawing it back to the narrow part of the sole, pressing it in the centre, v In -hen thc'jhooks cp will-pass 'ovc'gt the edges'ot' the sole, and being let go, the contractionot' the rubber or elastic 3 stgnmwill drew the clasp fomim'tton wider part of't'he sole, thus holding it securely in place. To remove the soTo ill is only necessary to press the clusp back to' the narrow part of the shoe-sole, when'itis free to;coinc oll'. Theadvants'ges' ot' my improved over-solo'are uieny and obvious- Itwill :eadilybc seenthat it isnpplb s of. boots-shoes, orgeiters, being made of different sizes to suit the requiremeutsot house or on extra occasions! As asandal it will .take the place of rover-shoes to a great 'ex tent,,being, when 7 mudcfof rubber, sufficient protection to the feet to prevent doimpne'ss, does not sweat the feet, is ihuch lighter, I :aiitlgives a neat appearance to the shoe. It worn as n creeper, to prevent slipping on snow or ice,2. e., with Sharp metal points attached to the-sole, its advantage is equelly apparent, as the ease \i'ith which they can be nttuchcilrmd detsched render them all that is desired.
'Horingthus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Melting the rod!- end of an over-sole of elastic rubber, to which is attached a spring-clasp, operating subt t'oll in thema nner 'and for the ur oses specified, M l i p p EDMUND w. WOODRUFF.
