SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,934, dated December 3, 1901.
Application filed February 8, 1901. Serial No. 46 538. (No modeh) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OTTO O. GRAF, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in safety-pins, and relates more particularly to a spring-clasp that is applied to brooches, ornamental pins, and the like.
The present invention has for its object to apply a device whereby the pin is securely fastened in a manner that will prevent any accidental displacement of the same; furthermore, to provide an attachment that will permit expensive jewels to be worn with perfect safety.
The invention further contemplates to provide a clasp for pins that will guard and retain a pin when the latter becomes worn and loses its resiliencyr It is a well-known fact that expensive jewels are often lost by means of insufficientsecuring means; and it is the object of the present invention to provide a device to overcome this objection which will be strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a brooch having attached thereto my improved fastening means. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is anenlarged detail View of the spring. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the keeper.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicatesa brooch, and 2 the pin which is secured at 3 to the rear face of the brooch in the ordinary and well-known manner.
4 indicates the keeper, which is partly circular in form, having an upturned end 5, forming a seat for the pin.
The reference-numeral 6 indicates a slot formed in the keeper, which acts as a guide for the spring '7, said spring being soldered or otherwise rigidly secured to the under face of the brooch, as shown at 8, and forming a circularly=curved portion 9 and terminating in an outwardly curved portion 10. The end of the said spring extends through the slot 6 of the keeper.
The operation of my improved fastening means is as follows: Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, the pin is brought to bear on the 1 under face of the spring, and'by raising the same the spring will be elevated to allow the end of the pin to be inclosed in the keeper. When pressure is released, the spring 7 will press firmly against the keeper in the slot 6, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and will retain the pin in its proper position and inclosing the same within the keeper, thereby preventing any accidental displacement of the pin from the keeper. In order to release the pin, the same is pressed upwardly against the spring and then passed over the keeper, releasing the same from engagement and al-' lowing the pin to be withdrawn.
It will be seen that the most essential fea ture of my invention is to arrange the spring in relation to the keeper in such a manner that the latter will form a guide for the spring,
and this may be accomplished in various modifications. It will therefore be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--'- In a safety attachment for pins and the like, the combination of a pin, a keeper in the form of an incomplete circle having a slot formed therein,a spring restingnormally upon one end of said keeper extending through said slot and operating therein, the upper wall of said slot limiting the upward movement of said spring when the pin is disengaged from said keeper, substantially as described.
