Bc it' known that I, THOMAS LEWIS, of Malden, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, i l have invented an Improvement in Enema Syringes, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description, l reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which-4 Figure 1 is a section through the centre of a syringe having my improvement applied thereto. Figure 2 is an elevation (enlarged) of the end of the inlet tube which contains thc valve. 1 Figure 3 is a detail, (enlargeth) to be referred to. p i My invention relates particularly to that class of enema syringes provided with an elastic bulb, operating` in connection with valves placed within the metallic connectionsof thesyringe. vThese `valves frequentlydrop out and are lost when the connections are unscrewed for the purpose of cleansing the parts or packing in: thc j ,l box, to avoid which the valves have sometimes been enclosed in separate chambers. To form these chambers, l l however, it becomes necessary to have two screw joints in each connection, which renders the syringe .compli` i cated and expensive. i l v ,l l l i j l My invention has for its object to overcomethese diliiculties, and consists in retaining the valve in place and preventing it from dropping out by means of a perforated plate or disk, which is screwed down into the l connection over the valve, the liquid passing freely through it as required. l v V i Toenable others skilled-,in the art to understand and use my invention, I willproceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out. v
In the said drawings, A represents the -clastic bulb ofthe syringe, B the induction pipe, and O thc metallic connection between the two. The upper end of the pipe B is enlarged, forming a chamber, which contains the induction valve a, a female screw, b, bein`g formed within the chamber, by means of which the pipe' is secured to the connection C, and 'may be removed at pleasure. c is a perforated disk or plate, of metal or other suitable material, which is made to tit the screw b, and when in place, as seen in figs. 1 und 2, serves to confine the valve i a in its place, and prevent it frein dropping out and being lost on the pipe B being unscrewed and removedfrom thc syringe, and it will be seen that the perforations'in thefdisk c allow the liquid to pass freely through it, as required. The disk e may be readily turned to screw it down into pla-ce, or remove it when itis desired to take out the valve, by inserting thcsquarc end Yof a piece of wood or other article which may beat handinto the rec`` tangular opening d. i l f v By means of this arrangement all liability of losing the valve is avoided, while the cost of the disk c is very p triliing, and but one screw joint is rendered necessary in each connection. A similar`- disk c may be placed in j the branch D, over the cducton valve e, if desired, although I do not deem it of` as much importance, as the] f connection at this point is not often unserewed, .while the induction pipe B is removed each time the syringe` is` placed in its box. By the use of the disk c I am enabled to make a syringe with a long metallic inlet pipe, B, i as portable as those syringes which are furnished with two elastic tubes, as the pipe B may be made removable, and when unscrewed, so that it can be placed in the box,the valve is held securely in place without danger being lost. I do not confine myself to the use of the disk c in the particular variety ofvsyringe shown, as it I am aware of the nature of thepatents issued to H.
