ELI A. BURT AND I-IERMEN HARRIS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK. I
'MOURNlNG-BAND FOR HATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 685,391, dated October 29, 1901. Application filed January 30, 1901. Serial No. 45,364. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that we, ELI A. BURT and HER- MEN HARRIS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invent ed certain new and useful Improvements in Mourning-Bands for Hats; and we do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improved mourning-band for hats, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character with improved means for holding the band smooth and in an upright position, but which will readily conform to the shape of the hat and not be affected by moisture or any change of temperature.
With this object in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view illustrating our improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in section, and Fig. 3 is a view of the stiffener or strip 2 removed and showing the lines of stitching when in place on the band.
1 represents a mourning-band of any desired material and shape, and 2 our improved stiffener or strip, which latter is secured to the meeting ends of the band, as will now be explained.
The band is turned wrong side out and folded so as to bring the ends evenly to gether, and for the sake of convenience we shall designate one end by the numeral 4 and the other by 5. The stiffener or strip 2, which is composed of whalebone, celluloid, or other flexible material and preferably slightly shorter than the Width of the band and made with beveled ends, is placed on the end 5,
with one edge flush with the ends of the band. A line of stitching 6 is then sewed through the ends of the band and stiflener from end to end of the latter, and the band is turned right side out, so that the end 5 will cover the outer face of the stiffener. Another line of stitching 7 is then sewed through the end 4, stiifener 2, and through the two thicknesses of the end 5, thus securely holding the stifiener and ends of the band flat against the end section 5 and making the band smooth at the juncture of its ends and forming a neat and straight welt-seam.
By constructing our improved stifiener of flexible material it will readily conform to the shape of the hat, but at the same time be sufflciently stifi to hold the band smooth and prevent its curling or becoming uneven, and by securing the stifiener to the band by stitches, as above described, the changes in temperature and moisture from the head of the wearer cannot affect its perfect operation, and by employing our improvements the use of glue or other adhesive materialis dispensed with.
Various slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of our inven tion, and hence we would have it understood that we do not wish to limit ourselves to the precise details set forth, but consider our selves at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A mourning-band for hats comprising a band, a stiffener sewed to the meeting ends thereof by one line of stitches and the stifiener and ends folded back upon the inner face of the band and another line of stitches securing the stiffener and ends in suchfolded position.
2. A hat-band having its ends disposed parallel with each other, a flexible stiifeningstrip located parallel with said ends, a line of stitching securing'the ends of theband and stiffening-strip together, one end of the band folded over the strip and another line of stitching passing through the foldedportion of the band, the ends of the band and the stiffening-strip.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib ing witnesses.
