OEADIAH JONES, .OF SOUTH ENGLEWOOD, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 68,513, dated September 3, 1867.
IMPROVED LEATHER-BACKED HORSE-BRUSH.
@te dgehule rentra tu in time @niet gnent ma mating niet nf its sume,
TO ALL WHM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, OBADIAH JONES, of South Englewood, (Jones Road) in the county of Bergen, and Stute of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful improvement in Leather-Backed Horse-Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had te the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which y Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved horse-brush, showing it in process of construction.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same when completed.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
rlhis invention relates to a new kind of horse-brushes, and to the manner of making the same, and consists in making a leather-backed, round-faced horse-brush, and in inserting a core, which is made of one or more pieces of leather or other suitable pliable material, between the back and face-leather coverings, whereby the desired shape is given to the formerly straight face-cover, in which the bristles have before been secured.
The different pieces of leather are glued together, and the face vand back pieces are firmly connected bymeans of rivets. Inthe same manner the leather handle is secured to the back piece.
I am aware that leather-backed brushes have already been made, also that round-faced brushes are already inuse, but the two combined have never `been made, although such a brush is more convenient than those new used. The round-faced horse-brush is generally considered to be superior to the fiat-faced brush, as it can be more conveniently applied, and it' lthe back of such a brush is made elastic and pliable, its value and efliciency will be greatly increased. v
A represents a piece of leather cut in the proper form, according to the-shape of the brush. It may, if desired, be glued to another. piece, a, of similar form, hoth of which will then constitute the back of the brush.v B is the faceplate, made also of leather of proper length and width. The bristles C are secured'in the plate B in any suitable manner. D is a convex block or core, composed of one or more pieces of leather, which are glued together. The upper surface of this core is flat, and is glued to the under side of the back A. The lower side is rounded, and gives the required shape to the face B when the same is laid around iti The outer edges of the back and face-plates are riveted togetherby means of pins Z I), as is clearly shown in fig. 2. E is the leather handle, the ends of which are also secured to the back by means of rivets c, which also pass through the face-plate, -as is clearly shown n fig. 3. The bristles are secured to the face B while the same is dat, and are attached to the same by means of wires or otherwise. The back is secured to a board, land the core glued to it, as shown in fig. 1, and then the flat face is applied and bent on the core, and glued to the same, whereby the face will be rounded. `When dry the brush is removed from the board, the edges lare trimmed and riveted, und theninally the handle is secured. If desired, the bristles may be attached to the face after the same has been secured to the core, and while Yit-i's already rounded. The brush is then also secured to a board, with the cover glued, and when dry finished as .before described. I
What I elairuas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The round-faced leather-backed horse-brush, constructed as described, consisting of the strips of leather D, of unequal length, glued together and to the back A, composed of strips of leather a, the bristle-plate B, secured to the .smaller pieces of the core D, bent around said core and secured to the back A, as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
