EMIL REACH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LETTER-SHEET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,796, dated October 1, 1901. Application filed September 18, 1900. Serial No. 30,403. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom, t rnwy con/cern:
Be it known that I, EMIL REACH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter- Sheets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactidescription.
This invention relates to letter-sheetsthat is to say, sheets upon which messages may be written and which may be conveniently folded (preferably in the form of an ordinary correspondenceenvelop) and sealed, the sheet being folded in such manner that the written intelligence will be concealed from view and access had to the same only by breaking the seal.
The object of the present invention is to Y produce a mailable letter-sheet which, while complying'with the requirements of the postal laws relative to what may properly appear on the outside of envelops, will be adapted to carry, in addition to the written letter, various other forms of intelligence-such as pictures, advertisements, receipts, useful tables, or the like-all separate and distinct in the matter of location from said letter itself.
The invention consists of a sheet having a body portion and two'end portions, the body portion being adapted to be folded into one or more accordionplaits, and the end portions,
which are provided with projecting gummed margins, being adapted to be brought into contact and pasted together, the abutting faces being on the same side of the sheet, thus confining the plaits of the body portion between said end portions and the whole forming a strong, safe, and compact mailable package. On one side of the sheet the two end portions may be provided with portraits or some useful reminder or a picture of artistic value or serve as a coupon entitling the holder to certain privileges, or contain any other matter that may be attractive or valuable. In between these end portions will be the written or printed letter, so that the end portions may be detached, if desired, without injury to the letter. The opposite sides of the end portions will preferably be left blank, one of such sides being used for the address when the sheet is folded. The opposite side of the body portion is adapted to be used for one or more printed advertisements.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a plan of the obverse side of my improved letter-sheet. Fig. 2 is a plan of the reverse side thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sheet partially folded. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the same folded, pasted, and ready for mailing; and Fig. 5 is a dia grammatic view of an alternative form.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A represents the rectangular body portion of my improved letter-sheet, and B and B the rectangular end portions thereof. Each end portion, as shown, is somewhat wider than the body portion A and in the form shown in Fig. 1 somewhat longer than half the length thereof. The extended margins b b thus formed are provided with rows of perforations c c, and between said perforations and the outer edges of said extended margins are films of paste or gum d d. The paste or gum is applied to one side only of the sheet, and on the same side therewith the letter will be written, said letter preferably being confined within the limits of the middle or body portion of the sheet. The end portions on this side of the sheet may, as indicated in Fig. l, be provided with pictures, portraits, or the like, either for the purpose of ornamentation or as a reminder or hint to the recipient of the letter. Portraits of political candidates, forinstance, would be a political reminder. Those faces of the two end portions B and B which are on the same side of the open sheet are hereinafter referred to as corresponding surfaces. The opposite side of the body portion A may be used for one or more advertisements, while the end portions B B on this side will be left blank or at least contain nothing more than what ordinarily appears upon the outside of envelops.
In folding, the sheet will be first folded once -upon itself along line l 1, so that the letter and pictures, &e., will appear on the outside of the folded sheet. Then the end portions will each be turned down along lines IOO vIO
2 2 and 3 3, so that their gummed edges will lie in contact in position for sealing. The entire surface on one side of the sheet will then be covered. To open the sheet, the margins b b will be torn away along the lines of perforations o c.
It will be observed that While the folded edges s s, Fig. 4, may be slightly separated by manipulation after the sheet has been sealed the result would be to expose only a portion of the advertising matter, 'the letter, pictures, dac., remaining completely hidden.
Obviously the body portion of the sheet may be extended in length and folded into a plurality of pla-its, as indicated in Fig. 5, and as also indicated in said ligure the end portions may be provided with the supplemental gummed margins lm m, also adapted to be EMIL REACH.
