Be it known that I, JAMES ALEXANDER MO0RE,a citizen of the United States, residing at W'eir City, in the county of Cherokee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Crutch, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to crutches; and the object of the same is to provide a simple, durable, and economical crutch by utilizing certain improved means whereby the jar and impact caused by coming into contact with the pavement or the like will be reduced to a minimum.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a crutch embodying the features of the invention and shown brokenthrough in part. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional elevation of a portion of the crutch. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail perspective views'of portions of the crutch.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

The numeral 1 designates the opposite side members of the upper body portion of the crutch and have their upper terminals connected by an arm-rest 2, and at a lower point supplied with a grip brace 3. The lower ends of the side members are reduced and secured in the upper terminals of upwardly-divergent arms 4 of an intermediate support 5, the latter also having a vertically-extending tubular guide 6 between the arms 4, which. communicates with a lower central socket 7 in said support. The staff 8 has an upper reduced stem' 9 slidingly mounted in the socket 7 and guidefi and between a shoulder 10 at the lower termination of the stem and the upper end of the said socket, the latter being of greater diameter than the bore of the guide, and surrounding the said stem is a spring 11, which permits the upper portion of the crutch, including the support, to yieldingly slide on the stem with a cushion elfect, the said stem being of such length as to permit considerable vertical movement thereon.

a cap-nut 12, which is held in place bya screw-thread joint, to thereby prevent the said stem from becoming detached from the support.

The lower end of the staff 8 is adjustably mounted in a tubular footpiece or socket 14:, the adjustment being maintained by a setscrew 15, and on the lower ends of the said piece or socket is a rubber or other suitable tip or cushion 16. By means of the tubular footpiece or socket 14 the clutch may be lengthened or shortened to suit different persons.

The intermediate support 5 not only provides a strong and durable structure, butat the same time a simple mode of providing a cushioned effect is obtained.

The'parts of the improved crutch are easily assembled, and in View of the adjustable feature set forth a convenience of material importance in this class of devices results.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is- 1. In a crutch, the combination of an upper body portion including side members, an intermediate support having upwardly-divergent side arms in which the lower ends of said side members are rigidly secured, and a spring-actuated stalf having its upper extremity movably mounted in the central portion of the said support between the divergent side arms of the latter, the staff having means in connection therewith for lengthening or shortening the same.

In a crutch, the combination of an upper body portion including side members, an intermediate support having upwardly-divergent side arms to which the said body portion is secured, the support also having a central vertically-extending guide of tubular form, and a lower socket communicating with said guide, a staff having an upper reduced stem movably mounted in the socket and guide, and a spring surrounding the stem and fitting in the socket.
