1 Be it known that I, HENRY MALCOLM Mc- CAFFERTY, a native-born citizen, residing at Montrose,in the county of Montrose and State of Colorado, have invented new andv useful Improvements in Plows, of which the follow'- ing is a specification.

My invention is an improved sulky and' gang plow for use in irrigated alfalfa lands.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved plow efficient for use in irrigated alfalfa lands and one which will in operation make two or more furrows at the same time and with any desired width between them for the distribution of water over the lands in cultivation.

My invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a plow constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed parts thereof.

A A are rearwardly-projecting and downwardly-curved beams, all one piece, formed of bars of any suitable material, preferably steel, and bent at a, where they engage with clips b b, and are thereby iirmly secured to Said beams A A are also secured to axle B by any suitable means. In the drawings they are shown as attached to axle by clips d. Braces e e, attached to tongue f and to beam c, extend back and are secured to axle B by any suitable means. In the drawings I have shown the braces attached to the axle by clips and plates g g. Collars or boxings h and c' are placed around axle B, as shown, and held in place by clips d d and g and in which said axle B turns. Bars of.- any desired length are disposed between the bars comprising beams A A, as shown in the drawings, and pivoted at lo to clip-plate Z by hook m,'engaging with aperture n in said plate, or by other suitable means. Near the rearwardly-projecting ends of said bars j j are perforations, by means of which shoes o 0 al'e secured by bolts and nuts, as shown, or by other suitable means. Said shoes are formed of two pieces, open at the top and converging 'to a point at the bottom and secured to the lower ends of beams A A by bolts and Serial Ilo. 57,734. (No model.)

C is a cross-bar, perforated at either end and secured to beams vA A by any suitable means. In the drawings it is shown to be secured by clips s, with T-irons acting in conjunction with clips s, as shown at t, to aid in holding the beams A A rigid. Also by means of said crossbar C said beams may be disposed farther apart or nearer together, as may be desirable. By means of lever E, which engages with ratchet u, as shown in the drawings, said ratchet being irmly secured t0 brace e by bolts and nuts or other suitable means, axle B may be raised or lowered by the operator, as desired, said axle carrying the entire framework of plow upward or downward, according to the will of the operator, thus raising or lowering the shares D D and colters q q, making a deep or shallow furrow and enabling the operator to make irrigating-furrows every part of which shall be on a level with every other part and securing an even distribution of water over the entire ground under cultivation, an object not accomplished by any other alfalfa-marker. A spiral spring o is attached to beam c in any suitable manner and to lever E to aid the operator in raising or lowering axle B. Beams A A are kept from slipping sidewise on the vaxle B by means of collars and tie-bolts, as shown at w.

6. In a sulky gang-plow, the combination of a series of beams A, A; means for adjusting said beams to axle B; shoes o o and means for securing the same to the rear ends of bars j; means for securing the shares to said shoes; colters q q and means for securing the same to the lower ends of beams A A, substantially as described.

7. In a sulky gang-plow, the combination of a solid framework formed by plow-beams A A; a tongue f, braces e e and beam c; crossbar C with clips s; axle B bent at both ends to form two right angles and passing through collars secured in place by clips b b and g g; colters secured to the lower `extremities of said plow-beams; barsj and means for attaching the same to the plow-beams A A; shares D D secured to said bars j and to the plowbeams A A; means for attaching shoes o o thereto; a level` E engaging with ratchet u for raising the frame on the axle B, substantially as and for the purposes described.-

8. In a sulky gang-plow, the combination of the beams A A with axle B; means for securing said beam to axle; bars j disposed between the side bars of beams A A and supporting at the outwardlyprojecting ends, shoes o o carrying shares D D; colters q q and means for securing the same to downwardlyprojecting ends of beams A A; means for securing the shares D D to shoes o 0; a crossbar C holding beams A A rigid; lever E engaging with ratchet u, secured to brace e; a springe secured to lever E and to beam c; tie-bolts, holding beams A A securely on axle B, substantially as described.
