STOP-MOTION FOR CARDING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681,563, dated August 27, 1901.

Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. MORGAN and FRANK A. HANNUM, citizens of the United States, residing at Ware, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stop-Motions for Oarding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in stop-motion devices; and the object of the same is to produce a device of this character applicable to cotton-carding machinery.
Our device is connected to the calenderrolls and is operated thereby to actuate a lever which throws the dofier out of gear and stops the machine, all of which will be explained in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of the calenderrolls with our device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail of the catch-plate.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in both views of the drawings.
The numerals 1 and 2 designate calenderrolls, which will be respectively referred to as the upper and lower rolls. The lower roll 2 has spindles 3, journaled in boxes rigidly mounted on the framework 1. .The upper roll 1 has spindles 5, mounted in slots 6 and capable of a vertical movement. A yoke 7, having upwardly-extending arms 7 and a cross-bar 8, is attached to the spindles 5by means of boxes 9, secured to the ends of the arms 7. A lever 10, fulcrumed at 11, is connected intermediate its ends to the cross-bar 8. The outer end of the lever 10 bears a downwardlyextending arm 12, provided with a screwshank l3 and a bifurcated head 14:. The bifurcated head 14 is pivotally attached to an arm 15, integral with a catch member 16, pivoted to an arm 17 on a stud 18, adjustably mounted in a slot 19. The catch member 16 is traversed by two intersecting slots 20, inclosing a V-shaped tongue 21, having a blunt vertex 22. A lever 23, fulcrumed at one end on a standard 24, normally rests on the vertex 22. ness should attempt to pass through the rolls 1 and 2 in consequence of some derangement of the machinery, the roll 1 would be displaced from the normal position, which movement would be communicated to the catch member 15 through the medium of the yoke '7, lever 10, and arm 12. The member 15 would be displaced from the vertical, and the lever 23 would slide off of the Vertex 22, throw the doffer mechanism out of gear, and stop the machine.
lVe do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of our invention.
It is obvious that our device may be applied to any pair of rolls and the lever 23 used to stop any auxiliary device.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pair of rolls and means for driving said rolls, of a yoke connected to one of said rolls, a lever connected to said yoke, a pivoted catch member having a blunt V-shaped tongue thereon, said member being connected to said lever, a lever normally resting on the vertex of said V and means connected to said lever to be controlled thereby, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a pivoted catch member provided with a blunt V- shaped tongue, a lever normally resting on the blunt point of said tongue, means connected to said lever to be controlled thereby and means for operating said catch member to displace said lever, substantially as de scribed.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a roll mounted to be transversely displaced, a yoke connected to said roll, a pivoted catch member having a \I- shaped tongue thereon, means for connecting and means connected to said lever to be coii= said yoke and said catch member, and a stoptrolled thereby, substantially as described.
