JOSEPH B. ALEXANDER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. Letters Patent No. 63,142, dated August 27, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICE FOR ATTAGHING' GHIMNEYS T0 LAMPS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. ALEXANDER, of Washington, in the'county of Washington, and District of Columbia, have invented a new and improved Device for Attaching Lamp-Chimneys; and Ida hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact. description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents, in perspective, an s-shaped pawl or cam detached.
Figure 2 represents, in perspective and detached, projecting ears, by which fig. 1 is attached to the chimneyholder or deflector. i
Figure 3 represents, in perspective, a vertical section of the chimney and deflector, showing the pawl or cam A properlyattached.
Figure 4 represents, in perspective, an external view of the chimney, deflector, and cam A.
Figure 5 represents, in perspective, an isometrical view of the deflector, with the pawl or cam A attached.
Similar letters of reference, where they occur in the several figures, denote like parts in all cases.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the raised rim of the deflector with one or more S-shaped pawls, with a circular head, and having the fulcrum or axle fixed near the outer edge, thus forming a perfect eccentric cam which, when the long end is lifted up, will withdraw by a circular movement, and allow the projecting rim at the base of the chimney to pass into its place. Then the weight of the long end of the pawl will by gravitation turn its cam-shaped head inward, thus rising above the base-rim of the chimney and holding it fast in place. I v
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Imake of brass or any other suitable material a pawl formed like that seen .in fig. 1, having a circular head, with an axle through its upper and outer edge, as seen at D. This axle is supported by projecting ears C and C, fig. 2, which are riveted on to the raised rim of the deflector, as seen at C and C, fig. 5, and C, figs. 3 and 4. Now, if the dependent end of the pawl A be raised to the position of the red line B, fig. 3, its circular and eccentric head will be Withdrawn. The base-rim I of the chimney H, being caught on one side bythe hook G, will then pass to itsrcst on the floor of the deflector E. If the raised pawl be then allowed to return by gravitation to its position of repose, as seen at A, its eccentric head will rotate inwards and above the rim I, thus holding the chimney firmly in place.
The advantages of this device are as follows: It is simple, economical, and ornamental. It cannot easily get disordered, and it will receive or discharge the chimney instantly at a touch of the finger, while the chimney is held so firmly by it that it cannot be disengaged except by the lifting of the dependent end of'the pawl.
I do not claim the button or book devices, as patented by John S. Gwynn, August 27, 1861.
' What I claim as new and as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The S-shaped lever A, with its circular head working eccentrically upon the axle D, and fitting exactly into the contraction of the chimney above the base-rim I, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth .T. B. ALEXANDER.
