PATRICK O. SMITH, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
INVALIDJS EEO.
,SPECIFICATION forming part or Letters Patent No. 680,814, dated August 20, 1901. Application filed December 19, 1900. Serial No. 40,355. (No model.)
T0 all -whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK C. SMITH,a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Invalids Bed, of Which the followingis aspeciication.
My invention relates to an improved device for lifting and handling bed-ridden persons.
The object of my invention is to provide means easily connected to or arranged adjacent any ordinary bed, by which a patient may be lifted, turned, or otherwise easily handled.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is aperspective view of my improvement arranged in conjunction with an ordinary bed. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof.
In the drawings, 3 and 4 indicate head and foot frames formed, if desired, of iron pipe, to which suitable brace- rods 5 and 6 have been secured. Each post of each frame 3 and-.tis provided With a socket 7, into Which may be detach-ably fitted the heads or ends 8 of longitudinal braces 9. The upper end of each post of each frame 3 and 4 carries a yoke 10, open at its upper end to receive and support shafts 1l and 12, each of which is provided with a pair of collars 13, Which engage said yokes. Each of shafts 1l and 12 carries at one end a gear lat and at the opposite end is fitted to receive a crank 15. Gears 1-1 mesh with a train of gears 14.', carried upon suitable arbors secured to brace 5 of the headframe. Mounted so as to engage two of gears 14 or the gears 1-1 are pawls 16, which prevent an accidental reverse rotation of shafts 11 and 12. v
It is sometimes desirable to turn one shaft Without moving the other, and for-this purpose one of the gears lc, normally held in mesh by a pin 1.7, may be thrown out of" mesh into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Secured to shafts 11 and 12 are the ends of a band of canvas or other suitable material 18, which at the middle is passed across the bed on top of the mattress, but beneath the patient. Band 18 is provided With any desirable openings, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Shafts 1l and 12 may beheld Within the yokes 10 by pivoted buttons 19, extending across the tops of the yokes. Ordinarily shafts 11 and 12 are removed from theyokes 1G and may lie upon the floor at the side of the bed, (as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) With the surplus band Wound thereon, and in such position are entirely out of the Way of the patient and attendant.
The entire device may be easily removed from the bed by withdrawing braces 9 from connection With the head and foot frames.
I claim as my invention- 1. A bed attachment consisting of a headframe and foot-frame, a brace detachably connecting said frames at each side thereof, a pair of shafts, means carried by said frames for supporting said shafts, anda band attached to said shafts.
2. A bed attachment consisting of a headframe and foot-frame, a brace detachably connecting said frames at each side thereof, a pair of shafts, yokes carried by said frames and adapted to receive said shafts, a band securedl to said shafts, gears connecting said shafts, for simultaneous movement, and means for disconnecting said gears to allow independent movement of the shafts.
PATRICK. O. SMITH.
