EFFIE M. CI'IADSEY, OF DURANGO, COLORADO.
SPRBNG CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 680,763, dated August 20, 1901.
Application filed January 15, 1901. Serial No. 43,386. (No model.)
.To all/ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EFFIE M. CI-IADSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durango, in the county of La Plata and State of Colorado, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Spring-Olasps,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spring-clasps especially adapted for use upon shoes to prevent the untying of the shoe-strings. Its primary object is to provide a device of neat, simple, and durable construction which may be readily attached to the shoe at a point adjacent to the top thereof and which is adapted to inclose and clamp upon the knot in the shoe-strings and prevent the nntyin g thereof until the clamp has been released.-
"With these and other objects in View the inven tion consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in Which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the device, showing the same in position upon a shoe. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough, and Fig. 3is a plan showing the arms disengaged from each other.
By referring to the figures of the drawings it will be seen that the clasp is formed in a single strip of metal and comprises a broad supporting intermediate or base portion 1, having an aperture 2 in the center thereof for the reception of a rivet 3, whereby the device may be readily secured to a shoe. The base 1 terminates at its ends in outwardly-bowed and gradually converging or tapered springarins 4:,which curve inward toward each other and are provided at their free ends with knobs 5, which are adapted to interlock when said arms are pressed toward each other and hold the arms in such position until the same are pressed laterally in opposite directions. This clasp is adapted to be secured to the top of the shoe, at the center of the front thereof and at a point adjacent to the upper hooks or eyelets within the shoe. The knot of the strings is placed at a point between the springarms 4, and said arms a are then pressed to ward each other, causing the knobs 5 to interlock. The knot will thus be clamped in position and cannot be readily untied until after the knobs have been disengaged from each other.
Where the shoes are so constructed that the edges of the uppers are somewhat removed from each other at the top when in position upon the foot, the clasp herein described may be secured to a cord or strip, which in turn may be fastened to one edge of the uppers. B y this construction the clasp may be brought to a position directly in the center of the front of the shoe.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve to myself the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a broad support ing-base having an aperture in the center thereof; of outwardly-bowed spring-arms at opposite ends of the base and extending over the latter; and knobs at the free ends of the arms adapted to interlock when said arms are pressed toward each other.
2. The combination with a shoe; of a clasp having a base provided with an aperture therein; a rivet extending through said aperture and a portion of the shoe whereby the clasp is secured in position thereon; outwardlybowed spring-arms at opposite ends of the base; and knobs at the ends of the arms adapted to interlock when said arms are pressed toward each other.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EFFIE M. OIIADSEY.
