Description

@einen gisten @anni @Hita JOHN U. FIESTER, OE WINOHESTER, OHIO.
i i l Letters Patent No. 68,059, datecZAztLf/ust 27, 1867.`
IMPROVE!) snes-'rimessa'.
To ALL WHOM I'r MAY CONCERN:`
Be it know-n `that I, JOHNv U. FIESTnIt,-of Winchester, in -the county of Guernsey, and in the State of Ollio, `havo invented a new land useful improved Shoe-Latchet cr l'astener; and :I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clearyand exact `description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and i to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- ,Figure 1 is a top view of the invention attached to a section of ashes,` and closed together se as to represent the shoe fastened. l
Figure 2 is an edge view, with the fastener closed together.
Figure 3 is also an edge view of the fastener partly open.
The nature of my Invention consists in' forming or.` making 'a shoe-fastener by means of a doulblejointedrevolvifngclasp, buckle, or fastener, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable othersskilled in the art to malte andguse my invention, `I will proceed todescribe itsconstruction and operation, as follows; 4
In the construction of my improved fastener I may use any of the known metals that will answer my'pui pose, which will give `strength and lightness temy shoe-fastener. I make it of three pieces. A and A are thev -side pieces, having holes struck' through the yside next to the shoe, where it is attached by'mcans of the projections a a iniig; 2, or by being sewed on through the holes 6.5 b in fig. 1, In iig. 1 Bis the centre piece, which is bent over with'iianges en its sides,4 and into which' the projecting end of A projects, when the fastener.
is closed, as seen' also in fig. 2, at the ends of` the lmiddle `piece I3, and on each end of A and A is formed a socket, through which passes a pin, thus forming a hinged joint, as will be more clearly seen in iig. B. In iig.
` 1, at A, theprojecton is curved, as seen at c', to allow the pin to fall into, so that when the fasteneris closed,
the top of thefastener shall present 'a smooth surface, and toassist in-holding it ltogether when closed.
In the operation of my invention. after fastening it to the shoe in any convenient form the same is drawn open to `its furthest extentg In doing this Ais dra-wn up and back, as seen in g. 3, when itrises on the joints, and can be drawn to its utmost extent, thus allowing suihcient room for the foot to enter the shoe. Then, when t-heshoe is -on the person, pressing the parts A and A together, causes the swing hinges to'move up and toward eachother until A presses down on to the projection of A at the curve c, andthe middle pieeell appears flush with 'the side A', when the shoe 'is found to be securely fastened, and. when thus fastened it will be seen that it will not come loose unless lifted, as the foot is found to press closeup against the under side of the fastener, `and the' line of draught' is in such direction thatit will by it be held down firm on thefoot, where it will remain until relieved as already described.
Thus I am able to make a convenient, cheap, and eective shoe-fastener, a desideratum much to he desired.
I may findit convenient in some` eases to vary the form as herein described, as the principlejnvolved may allowv of othenforms of carrying it out in practical operation for all kinds of shoes to which I may wish to attach'it. Having, therefore, described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as now, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l The double revolving concave hinge A and B, constructed and operating as described, and for the pur poses set forth.
In testimony that I claim the shove-described new and useful improvements in shoe-latchcts or fasteners,
I have hereunto signed my name this'22d day of May, 1867.
` JOHN U. FIESTER.
