CHARLES GABEL, O
F ANDREW, IOlVA.
COMBINATION WAGON-BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,581, dated August 13, 1901.
Application filed June 5; 1900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GABEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Andrew, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, (whose post-office address is Andrew, Jackson county, Iowa,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Wagon-Body, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wagon-bodies, and more particularly to detachable and adj ustable side-boards for the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a wagon-body with adjustable side-boards, which may be adjusted for loading different farm products.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the particular construction of the various parts and in the novel manner of combination and arrangement of said parts, all of which will be more fully'described, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forminga part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wagon body, illustrating one set of sideboards. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the extension tail-gate. Fig. 3. is a perspective view of a wagon-body, illustrating the second set of side-boards adjusted in different positions. Fig. 4 is a side elevation. Fig. 5 is a sectional View. Fig. 6 is an end elevation.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 1 indicates a wagon-body,which may be adj usted in any desired manner. Secured upon the sides of the wagon-body at equal intervals apart are oppositely-disposed plates 2, havin g apertures 3 therein adapted to receive the stays 4, which are secured to the detachable side-boards 5, the forward ends of which are provided with oppositely-disposed cleats (not shown) adapted to support the front board 8. The rear end of the wagon-body is provided with an extension tail-gate 9, which when raised is in a vertical position and when lowered inclines from its free end toward the Wagon-body. The tail-gate is also provided with plates 2, having apertures 3, the object of which will be hereinafter explained.
When it is desired to load hay, fodder,
and the front board 8 are removed and are Serial No. 19,148. (No model.)
replaced by folding and adjustable side and front boards having standards 10, which are adapted to engage the apertures 3 in the plates 2. These standards are provided with lugs or projections 11, having apertures 12 therein, and two uprights 13, adapted to support the cross-pieces 14. Hinged in the upper ends of the uprights are arms 15, which support the slotted side-boards 16 and are further provided with dependent hinged arms 17, the shoulders of the hinges being provided with apertures 18, adapted to receive pins for locking the arms in a rigid position. The dependent arms 17 support slotted side-boards 19 and are provided with notched ends 20, having apertures 21.
The slotted side- boards 16 and 19 are adapted to be folded together when it is desired to make a high wagon-body, and when in such position the slots forming the respective side-boards lie intermediate each other, the notches 20 engaging the lugs or projections 11 and the apertures 21 registering with the apertures 12, so as to receive a pin for retainin g the side-boards in position. The tail-gate 9 is provided with similar side-boards, which are secured or made fast to the side-boards upon the wagon by a suitable clamp 22.
The dependent arms, which support the side-boards 19, may be raised in a vertical position and there held by the rods 23, which are detachably secured at each end of the side boards and to the center of the cross-pieces 14. The side-boards are further supported by a yoke 24, held in position by the pins 25.
The rods 23 and the yoke 24 maybe removed and the side-boards thrown open or apart. The body may be made further adjustable by removing the side-boards on the tail-gate and the cross-pieces and folding the sides so as to make a box-shaped body.
The front board 26 (shown in a folded position in Fig. 6) is of the same construction as that shown in the folding side-boards.
It will be readily seen that a Wagon-body of such construction will be of great advantage in hauling farm products and will efficiently perform all of its intended functions.
Having thus described the various features of my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s'
stays supporting the said boards, the said 10 stays adapted to support cross-pieces, and means for locking the front and side boards, substantially as shown and described.
CHARLES GABEL.
