To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ALPHoNso L. CHAN- DLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and usefullmprovement in Miter-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its objects to irnprove the construction of the bed of a luiterbox of that class in which a swinging sawguide is employed for giving the angle of the cut, to enable the angle of cut to be made more acute than would be the case in the-ordinary operation of .the saw-guide, to enable moldings having a groove or channel on the rear face to be maintained level in giving the angle cut, to adjust and guide the saw properly in relation to the cut, and to improvel generally the construction and operation of the various parts which enter into the construction of the ruiter-box as a whole.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in thev claims.

The ruiter-box is to be constructed with a bed or base frame A, having side rails and end pieces in the arrangement shown, but can be of other construction so long as it furnishes a support for the material or strip to be acted upon and for carrying the operating parts. The bed or base frame at each end, as shown, is supported on legs or standards a and is depressed at the center, so as to form a quadrant A', and, as shown, between the side lines of the quadrant and the outer end piece a piece orblock of wood or other suitable material A2 is inserted, and this piece or block can be sanded or otherwise roughened on its upper face, so as to give a resistance which will prevent the easy slipping or displacement of the material when in position on the bed or base frame. yAt the rear of the bed or base frame on each side of the center is a back or guide strip B, each strip pivoted at its inner end to the bed or base frame and having at its outer end a stem or bolt B', which passes through a curve b in the end piece of the bed or base frame and has its projecting end screw-threaded to receive a win ged clampingnut b', by means of which the back or guide strip can be rmly held in an adjusted position. Each strip can be swung forward, so as to stand at an angle in relation to the straight plane of the bed or base frame, as shown, by the back or guide strip at the left hand of Fig. 1, and when swung forward it produces a change in the angle of cut for the piece of `material by deilecting the line at which the material stands in relation to the angle of the quadrant, giving a more acute angle of cut than with the parts in their normal position,
ywith the back or guide strip parallel with the lbed or base frame, in which position the cut will be at an angle between ninety and fortytive degrees,while with the back or guide strip set inclined an acute angle between ninety and forty-five degrees or even more than ninety degrees can be attained. At the rear of the bed or base frame, on each side of the center and just forward of each back or guide strip, is an adjustable rest or support C, which can be raised by screws C', the stems of which enter into the screw-threaded sockets c' on platesl c, secured in the top of each rest or support, and the screw is held against advancing when turned by a plate c2, which engages with a groove asin the body ot' the screw. As shown,

adj Listing-screws are provided one at each end ofthe rest orsupport,so that the restorsu pport they abut against the nnderface of the grooveA or channel, as shown in Fig. 6, thereby giving a firm support for the molding or other piece of materialagainst tipping and furnishing a bearing for the strip or piece of material its entire width when in place on the bed 01' base frame, as shown in Fig. 6. Each rest or support can be lowered, soas to have its upper face in a plane with the upper face of the hed or base frame, as shown in Fig. 5, giving a level support or bearing for moldings or strips having a fiat under face. The adjustable rests or supports enable molding and material having a channel or groove to be cut at an angle readily and easily and without any trouble, as the molding or strip has a firm support on the bed or base frame its full width.
The saw-frame is located so as to swing coincident with the quadrant and is formed'of a main cross-piece D, pivoted at a point or pivot d to the bed or base frame, which point or pivot is located at the center of the circle for the quadrant. At each end of the main cross-piece is located a post or upright E, each post or upright having a channel or passage E', in which is located a slide F, having a tongue f, which passes through a slot e in the wall of the post or upright and has attached thereto the saw-guide G, which guide has a vertical slot g for the blade'of the saw and an opening g for the back ofthe saw, as shown in Fig. 3. Each post or upright E at its lower end has entered l-hereinto an adjusting-screw F', which contacts the lower end of the slide and by means of which the descent of the slide can be limited at any point desired to bring the saw-guide in proper relation to the material for the effective work ot the saw on the material. The saw-guide is located directly above a strip D', which swings with the main cross-piece and is attached in position within the space of the quadrant by the pin or pivot-bolt d and a screw d2, and this strip has in its upper face a groove or recess d in line with the guideslot g for the admission of the teeth ot' the saw and so that the saw can be made to completely sever the strip of material in making the angling cut. The slides are each movable in the posts er uprights and can be raised to the full limit of their length, if so desired, which will enable a thick piece to be placed in position on the bed or base frame to be operated upon by the saw, which is desirable in the operation of a miter-box. The sawguides are arranged far enough away from the posts E to prevent the vpacking of sawdust and consequent interference'with the easy movements of the saw.
The saw-guide formed as a whole, when swung to the angle desired for the cut, shuld be locked and held firmly in its swung position, and for this purpose a sliding catch or latch H is provided, having an acting end h, which enters notches h', formed in the edge of the front member of the quadrant, which notches can be spaced so as to produce a swing of tifteen,thirty, and forty-five degrees, or additional notches can be formed in the edge of the front member of the quad rant for intermediate degrees, if so desired, and when the latch or catch at its acting end is engaged with a notch the guide-frameas a whole will be held in the angle of the notch engaged for the operation of making the cut. The latch or catchlis simply mountedv on the lower or main cross-piece of the saw-frame. and, as shown, is held between a plate or strip H' and the top of the main cross-piece and between guides h2 on the top of the cross-piece, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The body of the latch or catch has a slot or opening H2, in which is located a coiled spring I, one end of which abuts againstthe end slot of the latch or vcatch and the other against a stud or guide I', extending up from the face of the main cross-piece, as shown in Fig. 8. The spring permits the latch or catch to be retracted, and v'when released the spring acts and projects the latch or catch for its acting end to enter and engage a notch on the edge of the quadrant to hold the saw-frame in its swung position until the-latch er catchis released.
It will be seen that by means of the swinging back or guide-strip the molding or other material to be operated upon can have its relation changed. so as to give an acute angle of cut,which,in connection with the quadrant, enables any desired angle of cut to be made. It will also be seen that by means of the adj ustable rests or supports at thek rear of the bed or base frame rabbeted strips or strips having grooves or channels on their under faces can be firmly supported for operation and that such support will be of theA full width of the piece of molding or other mateterial, as the rest or support completes the bearing when elevated to abut against the face of the rabbet. It willalso he seen that the saw-frame as a whole swings from a pivot coinciding with the center of the circleV of the quadrant and that the main crosspiece or support of the frame is below the bed or base frame and out of the way, while the u pper cross-piece is Within the plane of the bed or base frame at the quadrant center and out vof the lway and free to swing below the molding or other material being operated upon. It will also be seen that the guides for the saw can'be raised for the admission of thick material, permitting such material to be operated upon, and that the descent or drop of the guides for the saw can be limited and ad- IIO sev
justed to the point required for the most effective and reliable work in making the cut, and it will also be seen that the saw-frame as a whole can be swung to the angle desir'ed and when in position will be locked and held by the latch or catch. All of these features which enter into the construction of the miter-box of my invention are desirable and of great advantage and benefit in the operation of miter-boxes.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a miter-box, the combination of a bed or base frame, an adjustable rest or support for each half of the box endwise at the rear side of the bed or base frame, screw-threaded sockets inserted in each rest or support, one socket adjacent to each end of the rest or support, and adj listing-screws one foreach screwthreaded socket each screw passing through and rotatably supported on the rear side rail of the bed or base frame and entering its screw-threaded sockets, for the screws to opcrate and raise and lower the rests or supports, substantially as described.
2. In a ruiter-box, the combination of a bed or base frame having in its upper surface a depressed quadrant-shaped transverse center formed by cutting away the upper face of both the front and rear side rails each side of the transverse center of the boxv on converging lines from front to rear and diagonal cross-pieces extending from side rail to side rail and converging from front to rear parallel with the convergence of the cut-away ends of the side rails, each diagonal crosspiece having its upper face in a plane with the upper faces of the cut-away sections of the rails, a bar on the under side of the bed or base frame pivoted at its rear end on the center line and at the apex end of and swinging beneath the depressed center, a vertical post at each end of the bar, each post having a vertical passage rectangular in cross-section open at the top and closed at the bottom and each post having a lateral slot throughv its side wall, opening into the vertical passage and of a less length than the passage, a limit-stop carried by the closed bottom of the post, a slide for each post, each slide rectangular in cross-section and entered into the vertical passage and havinga lateral neck or web passing through the lateral slot of the post on the side adjacent to the longitudinal center of the bar, each slide limited as to the extent of its downward movement or drop by the stop in the bottom of the post, and a sawguide carried by the lateral neck or web of the slide with its lower end in line with thel lower end of the neck or web for the guide to overhang the post, each guide having a vertical slot in line with the pivotal center of the horizontal swinging bar, substantially as described.
3. In a ruiter-box, the combination of a bed or base frame having in its upper surface-a depressed quadrant-shaped transverse center formed by cutting away the upper face of both the front-and rear side rails each side of the transverse center of the box on converging lines from front to rear and diagonal cross-pieces extending from side rail to side rail and converging from front to rear parallel with the convergence of the cut-away ends of the side rails, each diagonal cross-piece having its upper face in a plane with the upper faces of the cut-away sections of the rail, a bar on the .runder side of the bed or base frame pivoted at its rear end on the center line and at the apex end of and swingingbeneath the depressed center, a vertical post at each end of the bar, each post having a vertical passage rectangularin cross-section open at the top and closed at the bottom and each post having a lateral slot through its side wall opening into the vertical passage and of a less length than the passage, a slide for each post, each slide rectangular' in cross-section and entered into the vertical passage and having a lateralV neck or web passing through the lateral slot of the post on the side adjacent to the longitudinal center of the swinging bar, a screw entered into the closed bottom of each post and limiting the downward movement of the slide in the post, a sawguide carried by the lateral neck or web of the slide with its lower end in line with the lower end of the neck or web for the guide to overhang the post, each guide having a vertical slot in line with the pivotal center of IOS) the horizontal swinging bar, and a strip extending from the pivotal point of the swinging bar forwardly to and alongside of the front vertical post and having a groove inits upper face in line with the vertical slot of the saw-guide, substantially as described.

In amiter-box, the combination of abed or base frame having in its upper surface a depressed quadrant-shaped transverse center formed by cutting away the upper face of both the front and rear side rails each side vof the transverse center of the box on converging lines from front to rear and diagonal cross-pieces extending from side rail to side rail and converging from front to rear parallel with the convergence of the cut-away ends of the side rail, each diagonal cross-piece having its upper face in a plane with the upper face of the cut-away sections of the rails, a forwardly-projecting rim at the front or base of the quadrant-shaped depressed center having its edge curved on the arc of a circle struck from the apex center of the quadrant and provided with a series of notches, a bar on the under side of the bed or base frame pivoted at its rear end on the centerline and at the apex end of and swinging beneath the depressed center, a vertical post atV each end of the bar, a slide for each post vertically movable therein, a saw-guide for each slide connected with the slide to overhang the post, each saw-guide having a vertical slot in line with the pivotal center of the horizontal swing ing bar, a strip extending from the pivotal IIO point of the swinging bar forwardly to and alongside of the front vertical post and having a groove in its upper face in line With the vertical slot of the saw-guide, a fixed upwardly-projecting guide-block on top 0E the swinging bar adjacent to the front end thereof, a sliding latch or catch munted on the upper side of the swinging bar and having an acting end to engage with the notches of the circular rim at the front or base of the quadrant-shaped opening, a chamber or recess in the under side of the sliding latch or catch to receive the guide-block, a longitudinal slot in the top of the latch or catch, a guard-plate above the sliding latch or catch, a screw connecting the front end of the grooved longitudinal strip and the`guardplate with the block 0f the swinging bar, a pull at the front end of the sliding latch or catch, and a coiled spring between the fixed block of the swinging bar and the acting end of the sliding latch or catch, operating to advance the latch or catch into engagement with a notch on the rim, substantially as described.
