TO ALI. WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:4
Be it'4 known that we, D.` HfKRAUsEin and'G.- N. BOWMAN, of Pottsville, the county of Schuylkilhrand' State of Pennsylvania, have `invented a new andgimproved Washing Machine; and we-,io hereby declare that the following is a full, clear. and-exact description thereof, whichwill enable others skilled in the art to makev and use the same, referencefbei'nghad to the nccompanying'r'awings, forming part of this speditfication,
in which-f- Figure 1 is a top view of our improved washing machine.l
Figure 2`is a vertical cross-section of the same taken through :c fc, tig'. 1.
Similar letters oi" reference indicate like parts.:l i l Our invention has for its obj'cct to furnish an improved washing machine simple in construction, not liable to get out of order, easy to be operated, and which will do itsl work thoroughlynd quickly; and it consistsin the construction and arrangement of the various parts o f the machne',ia s"here inafter more fullyr described.
' A is the box of the machine, the -sides and en'ds of which are vertical, or nearly so, and `the bottom is curved in the arc of a circle,'having the axis of the pivoting points of the oscillatingarms for-its centre. f B are the oscillating arms, to the forwardside of'thc lower parts of which are attachedh'orizontal slats C,leaving spaces between them of about half an inch in breadth. To the iicar side offth'e lower partsoffthe'bscillating arms Bis attached a board, D, as shown in fig. 21 The edges of the upper parts of the oscillating arms B are made nearly in the are of a.circle,`so as tokeep the .slats in the covcr'E, in which they'work, closed as nearly as may be to prevent the escape of heat and steam. To the upper4 ends oi' thcv oscillating arms-B, above the -cover E, are attached keepers,`F, for the reception oil the operating levers G, so that 'the said-levers, may be removedfrom the machine'when'pet in use. The'kcepers F-should Vbe made of galvanized iron orbthcr. siib-V stance that'i'will not be acted upon 4by the water. For convenience in operating theuxachine the^onters`ends of the levcr G may be` connected bya cross-bar, g', as shownin fig. 1. Hare the legs of the machine, which are attached to the ends ofthe box A, in an inclined position, as` shown in g box, and the end of which, upon veach end, extends above the top of said box, and tothe said projecting ends are pivoted the oscillating arms B, as shown in the drawings. I are horizontal boards attached to the sides of the box A, near their nppcredges, to prevent thewatcr from sputtering out, and toi support the cover E. Jis a false bottom curved ii. the same manner as the true bottom of the-box A. The false bottom Jis securely attached at its ends to the ends of. the'box A in such a position as to leave a space of'about an inch between'thev true ts side edges and slats C may enter the spaces between the slats g Y l In using the machine the clothes to bc washed are placed in the forward part of the box A, between the ribs C and K; andI as the oscillating arms B-are'moved forward the clothes are squeezed and pressed between pe through Vthe spaces between the slats C into the rear part of. the box A. As'the oscillating arms B are moved back the board D pushes back-the i water, forcing it tc flow into the forward part of the box through thespacc between the trucand ,false bott-oms,
which said water, risin'giagainst the clothes in the forward partei" the said box, turns them overso that a (liften ent part of the said clothes may be acted upon each time. i
What we claim as new, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, is
1. The legs H, attached to the .sides-'ofthe box Ain an inclined position, the longer legs having pivoted in their upper 'endsthe curved oscillating arms B, as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
2. The oscillat-ingarms B, constructed as described, the lower convex side having parallel convex slats C and its bottom edge board inclined to form an acute angle-with the convex sidesits upper end curved in the arc of acircle'insuch a manner that in its oscillations it shall completely fill the slot in the cover E, preventing thc escape of liquid, as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
' 3i The curved Vfalse bottom J, arranged in relation with the inclined board D and convex slats C upon the oscillating arm B, as |herein set forth for the purpose specified. y
