SAMUEL FENTON ALLEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FRICTIONAL DRIVING MECHANBSM.
.EECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,270, dated July 23, 1901.
Application led August l1, 1900. Serial No. 26,636. (No model.)
To tu whom t may concern.-
Betknown thatI, SAMUEL FENTON ALLEN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frictional Driving Mechanism, of which the following is a complete specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to produce improvements in frictional driving mechanism whereby through the aid of a compact and efficient machine intermittent motion may be communicated from one rotatory shaft to another and that by a yielding connection between frictional engaging members, whereby the tenacity of such frictional contact may be regulated and adjusted to varying strains.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure Iis a front elevation of my machine complete, some of the parts being shown in section. Fig. Il is a side elevation of the subject-matter of Fig. I, showing the frictional engaging members out of contact. Fig. III is a bottom plan view of the counter-pulley and its yoke detached. Fig. IV is a side elevation of the subject-matter of Fig. III. Fig. V is a front elevation of the actuating-lever detached. Fig. VI is a top plan View of the tension-lever detached.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates, by way of example, a suitable support for my machine, a plank which may be incorporated with a building or otherwise sustained in the required position.
2 indicates the base, and 3 the hanger, that constitute a preferred form of frame upon which the severalremaining members of my machine are assembled. The hanger is provided with a box fi, in which revolubly turns a main shaft 5, to which is fixed by any suitable means a pulley1 6, which being designed to communicate motion from the shaft 5 to a counter-pulley 7 is provided with a suitable friction-rim 8. The counter-pulley 7 is preferably of composite material and is provided with a face 10,made of a material corresponding to that of which the rim Sis made. The
material employed for the rim 8 and face 10 may be of any suitable kind, preferably 'such as will develop the necessary friction without undue binding or heating.
The object of my invention being to communicate motion from the shaft 5 through the pulley 6 to the counter-pulley 7, I provide means for throwing the pulleys alternately into and out of contact. This may be accomplished by mounting the counter-pulley 7 upon a movable support. With that object in view I employ a shaft 1l, to which it is securely iixed, and revolubly mount the shaft in oil-cupped boxes 12 and 13, preferably made integrally with a yoke la. The shaft 11 is designed to communicate power for any specific purpose desired and is illustrated as equipped with one of apair of universal gears 1 5, operatively assembled with its corresponding gear 16, secured to a shaft 17. The universal-gear connection is of course merely illustrated by way of example and forms no part of myinvention. The yoke 14 is provided with a hub 18, by which, as by a pin 19, it is pivotally Vmounted, so as to bring the counter-pulley 7 in proper alinement with the pulley 6 upon a stud 20, projecting laterally from the hanger 3. By movement of the yoke 14 about the pin 19 contact between the pulleys 6 and 7 maybe procured and in that manner motion communicated to the shaft 1l. I prefer to accomplish the movement of the yoke and consequent contact of the pulleys by a system of levers which will promptly respond to manipulation and be equally efficient for making and breaking contact between the pulleys and also through the intervention of a yielding connection between the yoke-actuating lever and the yoke. By means of the yielding connection the force applied to compel contact between the pulleys may be measured and regulated, so that if the shaft 11 be overloaded the faces of the pulleys will slip upon each other, thereby avoiding injurious wear or breakage of the machine or other mechanism connected therewith or operated thereby.
To edect the ends above referred to, I employ a tension-lever 22, provided with a hub 23, by which it is pivotally secured upon the pin 19 to the stud 20. The lever 22 is provided with an outwardly and downwardly projecting end 24,within which is formed a springsocket 25, adapted to accommodate a spiral spring 26, that is seated at its opposite end 27 on the under side of the yoke 14. Below the socket 25 the end 24 of the tenslon-lever is IOC provided with an integral internally-threaded tubular projection 28, into which screws a tension-screw 30, which may be provided with alock-nut31forfixingitsadjustments. Upon the side of its pin 19 or fulcrum the lever 22 terminates in lan arm 32, through which the lever is actuated to compel engagement between the pulleys G and 7. The yoke 14 is a pendent yoke or support-that is, it tends normally by gravity to hang from its pin 19, and that tendency is resisted by the lever 22. The necessary power or leverage upon the arm 32 is preferably obtained through an actuating-lever 33, which is pivoted, as indicated at 34, to a lug. 35 on the hanger 3, the movement of the lever 33 being limited by a pin or stud 36, projecting in the path of the hanger 3 on one side, and a bumper 37, projecting from the lever 33 on the other side and impinging against the face of the base 2. The lever 33 extends beyond its pivot 34 a sufficient distance to afford requisite leverage, and at its free end it is provided with a manipulating-rod 33. Operative connection between the lever'33 and arm 32 is preferably secured through engagement of a stud 40 with an inclinedface 41 upon the arm 32. The lever 33 may be of any suitable, preferably curved, shape, and in the form of embodiment of my invention illustrated is deflected, as indicated at 42, so that its free end will avoid interference with the tension-lever and that its manipulating-rod 3S will hang within easy reach of the shaft 17.
The operation of my device is as follows: The main shaft being in motion, all that is necessary in order to communicate motion to the shaft 11, and through it to the shaft 17, for example, is for the operator to pull upon the rod 38, whereupon the stud 40, riding upon the inclined face 4l of the tension-lever 22, depresses the arm 32 thereof, thereby elevating its end 24 and lifting the yoke 14. Through the movement of the yoke 14 the face of the counter-pulley 7 is brought into contact with that of the pulley 6. The tension upon the rod being' relieved, the pulley 7 and yoke 14 drop of their own weight, carrying with them the tension-lever 22 and readjusting the relative positions of the stud 40 and inclined face 41 for repetition, when required, of the operation above described.
As was above specified, the force applied upon the lever 33 is not proportionate to the pull upon the rod 38, but is limited by the adjustment of the tension of the spring 26, that yieldingly connects the tension-lever 22 and the yoke 14.
What I claim is-A-V 1. The combination witha frame and a pair of pulleys, With their shafts, one of which is movable into and out of contact with the other, of a pendent support for the movable pulley, a lever for operating the pendent support, and means in addition to said lever for actuating it to compel contact between the pulleys.
2. The combination with a frame and a pair of pulleys with their shafts, one of which is movable into and out of contact with the other, of a pendent support for the movable pulley, a lever supporting said pendent sup*- port, and a yielding connection between said lever and support.
3. The combination with a frame and a pair of pulleys with their shafts, one of which is movable into and out of contact with the other, of a lever for actuating the movable pulley, and an adjustable yielding connection between said lever and its pulley.
4. The combination with a frame, main shaft and pulley, of a counter-pulley and shaft, and yoke movable upon the frame, a lever extending upon opposite sides of its fulcrum into engagement upon one side with the yoke, and on the other into operative relations with an actuating-lever, said actuatinglever being mounted on the frame, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a frame and a pair of pulleys with their shafts, one of which is movable into and out of contact with the other, of a yoke supporting the shaft of the movable pulley, and itself movable upon the frame, a tension-lever also movable upon the frame, a spring operatively secured between the yoke and one end of the tension-lever, an actuating-lever, a stud upon the actuatinglever and an inclined face upon the tensionlever with which said stud engages, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of all which I have hereunto subscribed my'name.
SAMUEL FENTON ALLEN.
