Description
@uitrit tats atrnt @Hirn R. P. UNDER'WOOD, OF BRO OKLYN, NEW YORK Letters .Patent No. 67,821, dated August 13, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRIGATOR FOB. SPINDLES.
TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONORN:
Be it known that I, R. P."UNDERWO0D, of' Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and improved Lubrieator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,`ref`erence being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
l The present invention relates' to a new and improved lubricator for the spindles or shafts of machinery, more especially intended for cotton and spinning machinery; this lubricator being constructed and operating as will bc now described, reference being had to the accompanying` plate of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical-section through the luhricator with the shaft to which it is applied in side elevation, and
Figure 2 a tranversc horizontal section, taken in the plane ofthe line :z: z, lig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the spindle o1' shaft, to which lnay improved lubricator is applied. B, the oilcup of the lubricator, which cup is made of a conical shape upon its inside, and is secured to the spindle A, so as to revolve in conjunction therewith. The oil is supplied to this cup at its upper end C, which is provided with a suitable cover Vor lid, D, for closing it; this cover being adapted to screw over and upon the same. E, a centre core or plunger, within the cup I2, and about the spindle A, which is so arranged to turn therein. This core extends up through the cover D to the lubricating cup B, and projecting above the same, forms a part of or is attached to across-arm, N, suitably supported at each end F. In the core or plunger E are two inlet passages G, shown in lig. 2, which, at their outer ends, communicate with the oil-cup, and at their ends open to the spindle; the'outer ends of these passagcs being each provided with an extension-piece, I, by which the oil in the cup, as it is dashed or thrown about through the revolution of the spindle, to which the cup is secured, is caught and thus carried through the passages G to the spindle for lubricating the same; the surplus o il passing from the shaft through the outlet passages L, shown in iig. 1, and partially in fig. 2, provided in the centre core or plug, at suitable points therefor, and moving in an inclined or downward direction from the spindle outward,
I cla-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The oil-cup I3, attached to spindle A, and stationary centre plug or core E, having inlet passages G, provided with extensions I, und outlet passages L, for the oil, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this day of February, 1867. l
R. P. UNDERWOOD.
