Beit known that we, J OsEPH HERMAN ROD- Gnns and J OHN ADELBERT POWELL, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Pump-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to an improvement in pump-boxes for marine vessels. These boxes are built in the vessel from deck to floor and are intended to receive the pumps by which the vessel is kept clear of water. Ordinarily these boxes are built of Wood and are liable to become broken by the cargo, especially in loading and unloading the vessel. Our invention seeks to Overcome this objection by forming the box of metal, preferably pressed into the proper form. Such a box will resist all strains to which it maybe subjected, and even if bruised or bent it may readily be repaired, While the ordinary wooden box, if smashed, must be built anew.

This specification is a specific description of one form of ourinvention, while the claims are definitions of the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both Jthe views.

l) indicates the pump-box, which is formed of sheet metal and as here shown is in the form of a trough the open side of which is closed by the side of the vessel, and the box having han ges c at its side edges, by which'it is secured in place. The vessel shown is a scow with a wall side, and this troughshaped box is adapted to this sort of vessel. For vessels of other classes a different sort of box would be used. The box b has'ribs d thereon to strengthen it and at its bottom it is formed with openings e to permit the passage of water. The box is also formed with an opening f, covered bya door g, and by' means of the said opening the box may be cleaned Of such solid waste as may accumulate therein.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Apump-box for marine vessels, formed of sheet metal in the shape of a trough, the open side of which is secured against a vertical part of the vessel to form the closed box.

2. A pump-box for marine vessels, formed in the shape of `a trough, the open side of which is secured against a vertical part of the vessel to form a closed box.
