GILBERT GUYMER, OF LONDON, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES DENGATE, OF SAME PLACE.
LAll/lP CHllVlNEY FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 676,890, dated June 25, 1901. Application filed February 18,1901. Serial No. 47,868. (N m del) T0 to whom, it may concern."
Be it known that I, GILBERT GUYMER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of London, in the county of Middlesex, in the Province of Ontario,
Canada, haveinvented acertain new and useful Lamp-Chimney Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for hold ing a lamp-chimney, usually formed of glass, on the burner of a lamp, the object being to provide a device that may be readily, easily, and instantly adjusted to tightly and securely hold the lamp-chimney on the burner and which may be again adjusted to permit said lamp-chimney to be readily and easily placed on or removed from said burner, as required, and at the same time provide a device that will be simple, strong, durable, inexpensive,
and efficient in practical use and one that is capable of being set to tightly and securely hold lamp-chimneys of different diameter; and this invention consists of the improved construction and combination of parts, as
will be hereinafter first fully set forth and described and then pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lampburner embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the fastener. In this view it is shown adjusted to bind tightly on the flange or foot of the lamp-chimney, the latter being shown in section as well as a portion of the strap with which the shouldered or hooked end of the fastening-band engages. Fig. 3 is another View of same, showing the fastener adjusted to permit the lamp-chimney to be put on or taken off the burner. Figs. l and 5 are side views of the fastener when adjusted to the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3, respectively. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the binding or fastening band. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the lever. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the perforated metallic strap by which the fastener is adapted to bind on lamp-chimneys of different diameter.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 14 designates the lamp-burner; 1, the gallery 5c of said burner; 12, the foot or flange of the lamp-chimney, which rests on said gallery;
2, arms which are firmly secured at one end to said burner, and 3 are loops or eyes secured to or formed integral with said arms near their upper or free ends.
4 designates a metallic strap which is se cured to one of the arms 2, and said strap is provided with the perforations 5 and the socket 6.
7 designates a lever which is pivotally secured to one of the arms 2, preferably in the socket 6 of the strap l, and said lever is provided with a cross-bar S and with the wing 9, by which wing said lever may be readily and easily adjusted by the thumb or finger.
1O designates a clamping or fastening band, preferably formed of wire, which band is supported in the loops or eyes 3 of the arms 2, and near one end of said band 10 an indenta tion or recess 10 is formed, and this end of said band is secured to the cross-bar 8 of the lever 7, and a shoulder or hook 11 is formed on the other end of said band 10, whichshoulder or hook is fitted to engage with and be inserted in one of the perforations 5 in the strap 4. The fastening-band 10 is projected through and supported in the loops or eyes 3 on three of the arms 2, and the strap 4 after being bent around one end of the lever 7 is secured at one end to one of the arms 2. One end of said fastening-band 10 is then secured to the cross-bar 8 of the lever 7 and the other end to the strap 4 by engaging the hooked or shouldered end 11 of said band with one of the perforations 5 in said strap 4t.
Theoperation is as follows: By adjusting the lever 7 to the position shown in Fig. 2 the fastening-band 10 will be adjusted to tightly and securely bind and hold the foot 12 of the lamp-chimney or lamp-glass on the burner, because one end of the fastening-band 10 will be drawn over on the strap 1 to reduce the diameter of said fastening-band, and said band 10 will be locked in this position, because as said fastening-band is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 2 the recess 10 in said band will be adjusted opposite the inner end of the lever 7 to clear the latter as well as the pivotal support of said lever, and the cross-bar 8 of the lever 7, to which one end of said fastening-band 10 is secured, will be adjusted inward beyond a concentric line running through the point at which said 1ever 7 is secured to the arm 2. This will lock and securely hold said lever as well as said fastening-band against accidental adjustment. By adjusting said lever to the position shown in Fig. 3 the reverse action takes place. This adjusts the end of the fasteningband 10 back from extending over on the strap 4 and increases the diameter of the fasteningband 10, which freely permits the insertion or removal of the lamp-chimney, and by setting the hooked or shouldered end 11 of the fastening-band 10 in a perforation 5 backward or forward in the strap 4 the diameter of the circle of said fastening-band 10 will be reduced or increased according to the direction that the shoulderll of the fasteningband 10 is set in the strap 4. This will adapt one fastener to tightly and securely bind itself as well as the arms 2 on lamp-chimneys having flanges or feet of different diameter.
I have found by experiment that the construction herein shown and described gives the best results. At the same time while I prefer said construction I do not wish to limit myself to the details thereof, as they may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A lever provided with a cross-bar, and a strap provided with perforations secured at one end to one end of said lever, in combination with a fastening-band secured atone end to the cross-bar of said lever, and its other end formed with a shoulder or hook adapted to be secured to said strap, and means for supporting said strap, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
