TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY ROSENTHAL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paint-Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to that class of brushes in which a metallic ferrule is employed for holding the bristles; and the invention consists in a novel manner of securing the bristles therein by means of cement or varnish, whereby they are fastened with all the necessary tightness and firmness. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvement in paint-brushes is illustrated- Figure 1 being a side view of the bristles and ferrule, showing the manner of fastening bristles therein.
Figure 2, a side view with the bristles hnd collar or ferrule in place, and
Figure 3 a horizontal section, in plane of the line :v :17, fig; 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the bristles, and B the metallic ferrule or collar in which they are Secured as and in the manner to be now described. The bristles are first made up into a bunch form, and then being drawn by one end, C, partially through the metallic ferrule, are at such end open from each end, and the spaces between them filled with a fine dust or powder, which I deem best to form of one quarter part of sand, two quarter parts of ashes or dust, and the balance, or one quarter part, of chalk. To these bristles, at their ends 0, filled about and around with sand, any suitable cement or varnish is then applied so as to penetrate the same, when, drawing or forcing the bristles down into the ferrule, so that their ends will be even or nearly so with its upper edge F, by the drying of the cement they are there secured with a firmness and tightness sufiicient for all practical purposes, the cement as it dries causing the particles of dust and bristles to adhere together, and to become, as it were, one solid block of clay or stone. To still further tighten the bristles in thc'ferrule, a wedge-shaped block, L, or a series of them, may be driven into the centre of the same, as shown in figs. 2 and 3- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The application of dust or sand to the upper ends 0 of the bristles before cement is applied, whereby the spaces between said bristles are completely filled, and the end C made solid and prevented from being compressed and withdrawn from the ferrule, as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 18th day of May, 1867.
H. ROSENTHAL.
