Description
l @nimh tetes atrnt @ffice WILLAM A. nEvON, 0F RICHMOND. NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 67,419, dated August 6, 1867; mtedated July 23, 1867.
` f dige- .Sttzmlt refzmh to in time etta' what sin mating partant iin stmt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: l
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. DEVON, of Port Richmond,y in the county of Richmond, and State of New. York, have invented a certa-in new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Raising o'r Lowering and Suspending Ships' Boats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, ref 'erence'being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and inwhich-L Y Figure 1 represents'an interior side elevation of myliinproved apparatus in its' connection with'h ships l boat, and 'os attached to the bulwarks oi' a vessel, and
Figure 2, a. partly sectional view at' right angles to fig. 1, showing in black and redA lines the boat' and davit to which it is attached in inner and outer positions..
Like letters indicate like parts in both figures.
My improvementl has reference to a method'of raising or lowering andsuspending ships' boats, such as described in Letters Potent of the United States, No. 57,877, issued to me and, bearing date the 11th day. of' September, 1866, in which the ropes of the end tackles are rove through a block connected with an intermediate or central davit, and the loose ends or portions of-said ropes are attached to or made to biteuona rotating barrel to'facilitate raising or lowering of the boat, and by which method increased facility and security are obtained by conjointly working hothend tackles from a common centre, thereby avoiding tipping of either end` pf the boat, besides securing other advantages, as fully set forth in said patent. The nature of my invention` in this'eonnection' consists in wholly dispensing with end davits for support ofthe ond taeklc-biocks and swinging connection ofthe boat at its opposite ends to the bulwarks ofthe vessel, and employing in placethereof nn intermediate or central davit with a crossrod or beam carrying the ond blocks, and whereby the bo'at may not only be raised or lowered from a common centre, but' by the working of the one davit may lbe swung in or out of the ship with security and dispatch.
Referring to the accompanying drawing A represents' the side or buln'arks'of a ship, and B its boat, held in suspension by or to an intermediate or central swinging davit, C, having connected with it a block, D, and
cross-rod or beam E, carrying at or 'near its ends blocks G G, through which and corresponding lower running blocks H H, that hook on the boat at its ends, tho ropes b b of the end tackles are rove, and after being passed over and through4 the intermediate block D, are brought downwards through suitable pulleys, blocks, or guides e to a winch or barrel, I, to which said ropes are attached, or on which they have given them bite to y secure their joint operation `in anadvantageous and controllable manner, as fully set forth in the Letters Patent before referred to; or the end tackle ropes thus passed through the block D, and uniting at -a common centre` may be`otherwise worked `to secure a uniform raising or lowering of both ends ofthe bout for the more ed'ec'tuale prevention of accident than is attainable by a separate application and working of the end ropes, as, for instancinstead of the barrel I the two ropes may be given a. hitch round any suitable fixture. J' J' are braceV rods, uniting the cross-bar or beam with thedavit C, at or near its-base or bearing, and so as to swing in common with said davit, the same serving to strengthen or stiftenl the apparatus. i
By this my improvementnot only is uniformity secured in raising or lowering both ends of the boat from a common centro in a manageable manner, with safety and dispatch', but, instead of having to swing out or in, first one end dav-it and then the other, to bring the boat to the required position, which, as boats are ordinarily suspended, is amatter of no little diiculty or labor, especially in a rough sea, when the ship is rolling, the boat may be swung out or in, as represented by black and .red lines in iig. 2, by the swinging of a single davit, C, which may be effected by a hand-spike or bar, d, by guys or any other suitable means.
What is here claimed as new and useful, and'sougbt to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe combination ofl the davit C with its oross-bnr or beam E, and blocks D G G, arranged for operation togethenin connection with the ropes of the two end tackles, and swinging from a 'common centre, substantially as and for the purpose or purposes herein set forth. l
WM. A. DEVON.
