To all whom, t may concern:

Be it known that I, FELIX VIANO, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chatelaine-Bags, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to chatelaine-bags, and has for its object a firm, cheap, effective, and neat construction.

Heretofore di'iculty has been experienced in devising a means ot' attaching the fabric of the bag to the metal frame or head thereof in such manner as to secure and not disclose the raw edges of the fabric when `the frame of the bag is opened. One unsuccessful attempt was to rivet the edge of the fabric between a head consisting of double plates, but hammering the rivets in setting the same so defaced the face of the frame-jaw that its beauty was destroyed. The desired ends above indicated are secured by my device,

which is hereinafter detailed in connection with the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view of my entire bag with the frame distended and the lower tongue detached; Fig. 2, a cross-section of the same on line n 0c of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the central portion of ajaw broken away; Fig. 4, a similar View of a like portion of a tongue, and Fig. 5 a section of the jaw and engaged tongue on line of Fig. l.

In the drawings similar letters refer to like parts throughout the views.

The parts are assembled by first sewing the edges of the cover s and lining t to the disengaged tongues m. Each tongue is then pressed back against the jaw c, into the groove d of which it tits, and the faces of the jaw c and tonguem lie in the same plane, while the projections n enter the holes e of the jaw and hold the members permanently fixed in this final position. I find that the elasticity of the jaw m is sufficient to allow the projections n to reach their corresponding openingsA e e and snap into the same.

It is evidentV that without departing from the spirit of myinvention otherlocking means than that disclosed may be used to permanently attach the tongue and jaw.

Having thus disclosed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a bag, the combination with the bagbody, and a pair of hinged jaws, of a pair of tongues hinged to said jaws and cooperating with the latter to conceal the edges of the bag-body, and means for locking said tongues in engagement with said jaws.

2. In a bag, the combination with the bagbody, and a pair of hinged jaws, of a pair of tongues hinged to said jaws and adapted to engage the latter, the edges of the bag-body iitting between the jaws and tongues, whereby said edges are concealed from view, said tongues lying flush with said jaws when engaged therewith, and means for locking the tongues in engagement with the jaws.

3. In a bag, the combination with the bagbody, and a pair of hinged jaws each of which is grooved, of a pair of tongues hinged to said jaws and fitting within the grooves of the latter, said tongues cooperating with said jaws to conceal the edges of the bag-body, and means for locking said tongues in engagement with said jaws.

4. In a bag, the combination with the bagbody, and a pair of hinged jaws, of a pair of resilient tongues hinged to said jaws and adapted to be sprung into engagement with the latter, the edges of the bag-body fitting between said jaws and said tongues when the latter are engaged with the jaws, whereby said edges are concealed from view.
