Description

No. 67|,833. Patented Apr. 9, IBM. M. MEYER.
AUXILIARY BOX COVER.
(Applicatiqnfiled Feb. 2, 1901.)
(No Model.)
ATTORNEYS NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORITZ MEYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
AUXILIARY BOX-COVER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 671,833, dated April 9, 1901.
Application filed February 2, 1901. Serial No. 45,717. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I,- MORITZ MEYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have in vented a new and Improved Auxiliary Box- Cover, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved auxiliary box-cover more especially designed for use on cigar-boxes and the like and arranged for convenient attachment to a box Without disturbing the contents thereof or without requiring removal of the original box-cover, the improvement allowing convenient viewing of the contents of the box, protecting the contents from dust, moisture, 856., and permitting opening and closing of the box to obtain access to the contents thereof whenever desired.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied and with both covers in an open position. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same with the original boxcover open and the auxiliary box-cover closed. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same with .part of the original box-cover broken out,
andFig. 4 is an enlarged rear perspective view of the improvement.
The cigar-box on which the improvement is shown applied is provided with the usual body A, a cover B, connected to the back of the box by a suitable hinge O, and an auxiliary cover for closing the box and permitting of viewing the contents thereof, consisting, essentially,of a frame D, made of sheet metal or other suitable material and containing a panel D of transparent or translucent material, such as glass, celluloid, or the like. The frame D is provided on its ends and on the front with depending flanges D for fitting over the outside of the ends of the box-body A and the front thereof, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 4. The rear end of the frame D is formed into an eye D engaged by a pintle D terminating at its ends in angular arms D formed with eyes D engaged by nails E, driven into the box-body A at the back thereof, below the hinge O and at the side of the ends of the cover B, so that the latter can be readily swung into an open position, and then the auxiliary cover is free to swing into an open or closed position without the least interference with the original box-cover B. The eye D and the pintle D, with its arms, form a hinge for swinging the auxiliary box-cover into an open or closed position.
It is understood that the ends of the body A of a cigar-box extend somewhat above the back and the front of the box-body, and the cover B snugly rests on said back and said front when closed. The eye D extends on the top of the back of the box-body and terminates a distance from the ends of the boxbody, as is plainly indicated in Fig. 1, to permit of extending the pintle D to the ends of the box-body and to then have the arms D extend upward outside of the ends of the cover B. Thus the auxiliary cover can be readily swung shut or open at the time the cover B is open to permit convenient access to the contents of the box.
By having a transparent or translucent panel the contents of the box can be readily seen at any time, and by ordinarily keeping the box closed by the auxiliary cover dust, moisture, 850., are prevented from passing to the contents of the box. By having the flanges D on the auxiliary box-cover the box is rendered completely dust-proof.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent- An auxiliary box-cover,comprising a frame, a transparent or translucent panel in the frame, a hinge for connecting the frame with the box, the hinge having its eye member formed integral on the back of said frame,
the pintle of the hinge being formed with an- I name to this specification in the presence of gular arms having eyes, and nails driven [two subscribing Witnesses.
through said arm-eyes, to secure the angular arms to the box below the hinge of the origi 5 nal box-cover and beyond the ends thereof,
as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my MORITZ' MEYER.
Witnesses:
THEO. G. HOSTER, EVERARD BOLTON MARSHALL.
