IMPROVEMENT IN FIFTH-WHEELS FOR GARRIAGES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN DEEBLE, of Plantsville, in the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Fifth-Wheel for Carriages; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereen, to be a full, clear, and enact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent in Figure 1, a top view.

This invention relates to an improvement in the manner of securing the two parts of a fifth-wheel together, whereby this part of the carriage is much strengthened, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction whereby the object of the improvement is attained; and in order to the clear understanding of my invention, as well as to enable others to construct the same, I will proceed to a description, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the axle, B the rocker, C the reach, D the king-bolt, a the lower part, and d the upper part of a fifthwheel, all constructed and arranged in the usual manner.
Considerable difiiculty is experienced from the fact that the two parts of the fifth-wheel are in no way secured together, so that as soon as the king-bolt has become a little worn the wheel becomes more or less shackly, and the entire strain in drawing the carriage is brought upon the king-bolt, consequently increasing the wear upon that point. By my invention these difiiculti'es are entirely overcome.
Upon the part c2, and so as to be attached to the reach, I form a yoke, f, which carries a wheel, 1, bearing .up upon the under side of the part a, so as to hold the two parts firmly together; and in order to thus hold them without creating too much friction, I make the wheel Z elastic, as seen in fig. 3, by forming a ring, E, of metal, with an elastic centre, F, upon a pivot, G, or an elastic face, F, and metal centre, E, as seen in fig. 4, so as to yield and press the two parts together only with the force of the elasticity of the material F. If the outer surface be metal, as seen in fig. 3, it should conform to the under surface of the part a. Thus the two parts are held firmly'together at the reach, and so that the connection at that point relieves to a great extent the strain and wear upon the king-bolt, and if, as often happens, the king-bolt is broken, this connection would hold the parts together and prevent the damage consequent upon such breakage.
I do not broadly claim a friction-roller, arranged so that the fifth-wheel will turn thereon.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 Forming a connection and bearing of the two parts of a fifth-wheel at their intersection with the reach, by means of the yokefand the wheel Z, so as to support and hold the two parts of the fifth-wheel together, the
