PATENT Geri on.

ROCKER-VALVE GEARING FOR ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,231, dated February 19, 1901.
Application filed July 19, 1900. Serial No. 24,243. (No model.)
To all whom it ntay concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. STRAUsE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at ()skaloosa, in the county of Mahask'a and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocker-Valve Gearing for Locomotive-Engines and Motion of Gearing, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to rocker-valve gearing for locomotive-engines.
One object of the invention is to provide means pivotally connected between the two rocker-arms, working in one box, coupled to one lever leading back from the main rod of the engine for shifting the parts, so as to cause a forward or backward movement of the engine, according to the position at which the link is set.
A further object of this invention is to ob viate the use of eccentrics and the mechanism which form the necessary adjuncts, whereby the strips on the cams are dispensed with and rotary motion and its consequent friction are supplanted by the pivotal connection illustrated.
Furthermore, the object of theinvention is to provide mechanism for shifting the link which will possess advantages in points of simplicity, durability, and efficiency and which will prove comparatively inexpensive to produce and sustain.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of parts to be hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the views, and in which Figure 1 shows an elevation of the power mechanism of an engine with the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line a: of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a cylinder, 2 a steam-chest, 3a piston-rod, 4 a guide, 5 a valve-stem, and 6 a link, all of which being of ordinary construction need not be described in detail.
The reach-rod 7 is pivotally connected to the bell-crank 8, and the bell-crank in turn being pivoted to the standard 9. Alink-lifter 10 is pivoted to the horizontally-disposed leg of the bell-crank lever and is so constructed as to elevate or lower the link, according to the movement of the reach-rod. Link-blades 11 are pivotally connected to the links at its edge, rear, top, and bottom, said blades extending rearwardly.
The valve-gear com prises the metallic strips 12,having their forward ends pivoted together at 13, said strips being also pivoted to the rear ends of the link-blades 11. The strips 12 are curved longitudinally in opposite directions, and the upper strip is pivotally connected to the arm 13, which is also pivoted at one end to the main rod 14, so as to take motion therefrom. A strip 15 is pivoted to the lower strip 12 and to the arm 13, so as to connect the arm 13 through the strips 12 and 15 with the lower link-blade. It will be observed that the blade which is pivoted to the top of the link is coupled to the strip 12 on a line above the center of motion and that the rear end of the bottom blade is coupled to the strip 12 below the center of motion. The link 6 actuates theblock 16, coupled to the valvestem to the rear of the steam-chest.
The construction, operation, and advantages will, it is thought, be understood from the foregoing description, it being noted the various changes in the proportions and other details of construction may be resorted to for successfully carrying the invention into practice.
Having fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a valve mechanism for locomotives, the combination of the valve-rod and the link for operating same, means for reciprocating the link vertically, link-blades pivoted to the link near its top and bottom, strips pivoted to the ends of the link-blades, an arm pivoted to the upper strip at one end and to the connecting-rod at the opposite end and a strip pivoted to the strip of the lower link-blade and to the arm.
2. In combination with a link of a valveshipping mechanism, means for shifting, the link-blades pivoted to the edge of the link at In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. STRAUSE.
