To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAV BERGWITZ, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Hundsfeld, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Accessories for Plates for the Use of Children, (for which I have applied for a patentin Germany, dated March 22, 1900,) of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an attachment for plates designed to encourage and facilitate the use of a spoon or like article by a child in eating.

By means of this invention a child can use a spoon or fork without difficulty and is enabled to easily feed itself without assistance.

in the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one form of the invention.

Figure 1 is a plan View of the attachment secured to a plate, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof.

The attachment, as shown, consists of a metal plate, one end of which is bent to form a clamp c, by whichit can be readilyattached to the edge of the plate. It is then bent in wardly and downwardly, so as to lie close to and over the rim a of the plate and extend down into the plate, and this part b of the de vice may have an opening which will facilitate its close fitting to the rim. The plate is then bent upwardly to form an abutment 6, against which the spoon or fork used by the child can be pressed, and the extremity of the plate is bent inwardly, as at d, to form a flange on top of theabutmentand prevent thespoon or fork, the, slipping over part c.

In using the device the plate is filled with edibles-say soup, for instance. The child naturallyattempts to fill its spoon by pulling the spoon through the dishand ordinarily will drag the spoon and its contents over the rim of the plate; but in the present instance the spoon will be arrested by the abutment e, and then the child will have to lift the spoon clear of the attachment, and will thus be prevented from wasting its food and caused to lift the spoon properly.

It will be seen from the foregoing that the objects of the attachment are to enable a child to feed itself without causing the spoon or other article to slip from the plate, owing to its awkwardness in handling the same,and to avoid the soiling of the table-cloth and other surroundings.

By means of this attachment the use of a spoon, 850., is considerably facilitated, and the child will be able to feed itself in a very short time and is not tempted to use its left hand in eating as an accessory to the spoon or other article, nor, as is so often the case, to disregard all accessories and make use of its hands alone.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-

1. An attachment for childrens plates adapted to be attached to the rim and assist the child in filling its spoon, &c., said attachment having a clamp for holding it to the rim and extending overthe rim intothe plate and having a vertical abutment against which the spoon, the, can be pressed in filling the latter, and a horizontal inwardly extending flange at top of the abutment, substantially as described.

2. The herein -described attachment for childrens plates, consisting of a metal plate having one end bent to form a clamp c, a portion 1) extending over the rim and into the plate, an abutment e within the plate, and a flange cl on top of the abutment, for the purpose and substantially as described.
