SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,320, dated January 22, 1901.

Be it known that LCHA'RLES KLINGER,a citizen of the United States,residin g at Hawk Eye, in the county of Fayette and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in securing devices or buckles, and while my securing device will be found desirable for all of the various purposes for which such a device is generally employed it will be found to be especially valuable for use upon shoes of all varieties, and especially upon overshoes.

One object of my invention is to provide a device of the character specified which shall be very cheap in construction and simple and effective in operation.

Other objects and advantages will be made fully apparent in the following specification, considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention as applied to use upon a shoe. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of the tongue of my buckle. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the keeper-section of my improved buckle. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is'a perspective view of my securing device or buckle removed from the shoe. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a portion of my buckle, showing a slightly-modified construction from that presented in Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the device illustrated in Fig. 6.

In order to conveniently designate the several parts of my invention and their cooperating elements deemed necessary to illustrate a practical application thereof to use, 1 indicates a shoe of the usual or any preferred construction, to one side of the upper portion of which I secure the tongue section of my buckle, which consists of the body portion proper, 2, having the apertures 3 and 4. The outer end of the body portion is bent upon itself, thereby providing the loop-section 5, while the free end is extended outward to provide the handle 6. 7 of the tongue is provided upon each end with a series of serrations 8, designed for a purpose hereinafter made clear.

The tongue of my buckle may be connected to the shoe in various ways, preferably by tion 9, which latter may be sewed to the shoe or otherwise attached in place.

The keeper part of my buckle, with which the tongue is designed to cooperate, is clearly shown in Figs. 4. and 6, and it consists, preferably, of a single piece of material, one end of which is provided with a slotted aperture 10, by means of which it may be secured to the shoe, as by cooperating with the flexible section 11, attached to the shoe. The keeperplate is bent near its middle, so as to form the right-angled section 12, while the middle portion is provided with an opening designed for the reception'of the free end of the tongue, said opening being enlarged at its outer end, as indicated by the numeral 13, the remaining portion of the opening being of less extent. Said opening may be so formed that the portion struck out therefrom will provide the handle-section 14, which may extend outward in such a way as to be conveniently grasped by the hand of the operator, or said section 14 may be left to extend in such a po-' sition" that it will lie substantially parallel with the tongue-section when the latter is entered through the enlarged end 13 of the opening. By thus providing the enlarged end 13 it will be observed that the inwardlycurved shoulders or lips 15 are formed, the purpose of which is to so act upon the contiguous teeth or serrations 8 that they will be engaged by said lips and drawn tightly downward, thus insuring that the tongue will be securely held in an adjusted position.

The operation or manner of using my improved buckle may be stated to be as follows: After the tongue and the keeper have been properly secured in their respective operative places the free end 16 of the keeper may be moved outward so that said keeper will stand substantially at right angles to the shoe, when the free end 7 of the tongue may be freely entered through the enlarged opening 13. After the tongue 7 has been thus inserted as far as desired in the opening 13 the free end 16 of the keeper may be brought around toward the anchored end of the tongue, which will cause the inwardly-curved lips to take in between the contiguous serrations or teeth 8 and cause said teeth to ride upon the curved outer surface of said lips, and thus bind the parts securely in an adjusted position. When it is desired to release the buckle, all that is necessary to be done is to move the free end 16 of the keeper outward, when the teeth will drop out of engagement with the curved lips 15, and thus dispose the tongue 7 in the enlarged end 13 of the opening, and thereby permit said tongue to be freely Withdrawn and the shoe released.

It will be understood that the various parts of my improved buckle or securing device for shoes or the like may be modified or changed without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore Wish to comprehend in this application all substantial equivalents and substitutes thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The herein-described securing device or buckle comprising a tongue-section having serrations upon each edge; means to attach said tongue-section to the shoe, in combination with the keeper-plate having a slotted end 10 by means of which it may be anchored in position and further having an opening near the central portion thereof, the inner end of said opening being enlarged as indicated by the numeral 13; a handle or guardsection 14 overlying said opening 13, said opening being further provided with the inwardly-curved lips l5, all combined substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
