Description

Patented 1616/22, 19m. 6. R. HAMILTON.
FRIEVEZERI- (Application filed June 16, 1900.)
(No Model.)

m: seams PETERS cu PHOYQLITHQ. WASHMGTON "U Nrrnn 'rerns CHARLES RICHARD HAMILTON, OF MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.
F R E E2 E R SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 666,269, dated January 22, 1901. A li ti fil d June 16, 1900. Serial No. 20,579. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES RICHARD HAM-- ILTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montgomery, in the county of Montgomery and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Freezers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in freezers, and especially to a cooler or freezer in which the usual crank and stirring mechanism is dispensed with and instead thereof a conical-bottom can is provided, which by being packed in ice underneath its conical portion, as well as about its circumference, presents a large coolingsurface to the contents of the can, and by the provision of a reciprocating hollow conical stirrer the contents of the can may be continuously forced against the sides and bottom and become thoroughly agitated during the freezing process.
In connection with the foregoing another feature of the invention resides in the provision of a spring-bar which is pivoted at one end to the bucket in which the can is packed and sprung over the lid or cover to the can and having its free end caught under an offset in the bucket diametrically opposite its pivotal portion, whereby the cover is socurely held in place while the stirrer is being operated.
My invention will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim and is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, in which-- Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional View through a freezer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the bucket containing the freezer or cooling apparatus, showing the manner in which the lid is held to the bucket. Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the bucket, which may be of any convenient shape in which ice B may be packed about the circumference of the can 0, adapted to rest in said bucket. The can 0 has preferably a conical-shaped bottom 0, which extends up within the circumference of the lower portion of the can, and D is a lid for the can, which lid is centrally apertured, as at D, and provided with a packing ol, allowing the stem E of the stirrer to reciprocate freely through said apertured lid. The outer end of said stem is provided with a handle E, and at the lower end of said stem is a hollow conicalshaped stirrer F. This stirrer is perforated, as shown at G, and the diameter of the open end of said stirrer should be substantially of such width as to snugly fit the opening in the can and of such shape as to fit over the conical-shaped bottom of the can when the stirrer is at its lowest limit.
Pivoted on the inner wall of the bucket, as at H, is a spring-bar H, which may be coiled, as at h, to make said bar more flexible, and the free end of said bar is adapted to be depressed in the slot A at a location preferably diametrically opposite the pivotal point of said bar. The lower end of the slot A is preferably curved, forming an offset a, in which hooked or offset portion the free end of said spring-baris adapted to engage in order to hold the lid of the can against which it presses securely in place, as shown in the drawings.
In adapting the device for use as a freezer in which the stirrer is utilized, as in making ices, whipping cream, &c., a quantity of ice is placed in the bottom of the bucket, preferably near its center portion, and when the can is placed in the bucket and pushed down over said ice the latter will fill the conical space in the bottom of the can, after which 5 ice may be packed about the circumference of the can. The cream placed in the can, it will be noted, is exposed to the cold surface on the inner circumference of the can, as well as about the conical wall of the bottom portion, thus exposing a large surface to the influence of the cold. The stirrer is then inserted and the lid secured down, and by raising the latter the stirrer and cream is forced downward against the sides and conical bottom of the can and through the perforations in the stirrer and thoroughly agitated as the stirrer reciprocates back and forth, thus continuously bringing the various portions of the cream in contact with the cold surface of the can. After the cream has been cooled to the desired consistency the stirrer may be removed, and an imperforate lid or cover may be placed over the can and held securely thereto by means of the spring-bar described.
When it is desired to utilize my device for cooling milk or other substances, the can may be packed in ice and the stirrer dispensed with.
From the foregoing it will be observed that my improved freezer may be used equally well for freezing cream, agitating milk, as in a churn, and for Working fine pastry, making various kinds of cake, floats, custards, and dressings of all kinds.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the ice-bucket with metallic bands thereon, and covered can seated in the bucket, the spring-bar pivoted to an eye on the inner wall of the bucket, the upper edge of the bucket slotted as at A, the lower end of said slot being curved and registering with a curved recess in the metallic band about the bucket, the free end of said spring-bar designed to be yieldingly held at the extreme end of the curved portion of the slot and recess in the band, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES RICHARD HAMILTON.
