TINTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRITZ MACK, OF NUREMBERG, GERMANY.
FOLDlNG COLLAPSIBLE TABLE, CHAIR, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,017, dated January 15 1901.
Application filed May 5, 1900- Serial No. 15,660. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ MACK, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Nuremberg, Bavaria, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved folding or collapsible device as a support for tables, chairs, and like articles; and it consists in the employment of lazytongs arranged to form a collapsible, angular, or three-legged support, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a table embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is adetail viewof the stretcher for holding the lazy-tongs in a distended position; Fig. 3, a side elevation of said table collapsed; Fig. 4, a sectional plan view on the line 4 4 of Fig. l of the legs or support detached; Fig. 5, a top plan view of said table collapsed with the legs and stretcher in dotted lines. Figs. 6 and 7 represent a modification, and Fig. 8 a section thereof on the line 8 8 of Fig. 7.
First describing the invention as applied in the form of a three-legged support and as depicted in the first five figures of the draw ings, A indicates a table-top which may stand as an exponent for any suitable structure to be supported, and a, b, and 0 represent three sets of lazy-tongs arranged in intersecting vertical planes, so as to radiate from each other as a tripodal support. The inner upper arms a b c of these lazy-tongs are mutually interconnected by hinge-joints through a casting B, which is firmly secured to the table, while the outer upper arms a b c are free for slip-contact with the under side of the table.
In order to hold the lazy-tongs properly extended, a suitable stretcher d is employed, which is hingingly secured to any appropriate joint of the lazy-tongs or to one of the knuckles d of a series interconnecting the insetting-joints of said lazy-tongs and may be clamped between distended members of the lazy-tongsas, for instance, by a counter-hook d taking over an opposing knuckle.
Suitable feet e f g are arranged on the three outer lower arms of the lazy-tongs, the corresponding inner arms thereof being advisably' interconnected by a knuckle, as aforesaid, somewhat above the plane of the feet.
In Figs. 6, 7, and SI have shown an arrangement adapted to use with oblong or rectangular tables A or other articles requiring Widely-separated supports. Herein two pairs of lazy-tongs h and 'i, arranged divergently in intersecting vertical planes and interconnected at their inner joints along the line of intersection by knuckles jand to the table by a'knuckle-block j, are employed, one pair at each end ofthe table. Stretchers 7t and one for each pair, similar to the stretcher employed with the above-described tripodal set, serve to hold the lazy-tongs distended, the tongs being readily collapsible when said stretchers are released.
I claim 1. The combination with a table or like article, of a support therefor comprising lazytongs arranged in divergent planes intersecting each other with their insetting joints hingingly interconnected along the line of intersection, and a stretcher for holding said tongs distended.
2. The combination with a table or like article, of a tripodal support therefor, comprising three sets of lazy-tongs set radiatingly from each other with their insetting joints hingingly interconnected, and a stretcher hinged to one of the joints and adapted to be clamped to an opposing joint.
3. The combination of the table, the angularly-arranged lazy-tongs, the knuckles interconnecting the insetting joints of said lazytongs, and the stretcher hinged to one of said knuckles and provided with a counter-hook to take over an opposing knuckle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRITZ MACK.
