STOPPER FOR BOTTLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,565, dated January 8, 1901.

Be it known that LAUGUST F. BOOOK,a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklyn,) in the countyof Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for Bottles, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to stoppers for bottles and similar receptacles; and the object thereof is to provide a bottle-stopper with devices whereby the withdrawal or extraction thereof from the bottle is facilitated.

My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter specified.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like reference characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, Figure l is a top plan view of a stopper constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a bottom plan view thereof; Fig. 3, a vertical section thereof on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a similar section on the line 4 at of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 a side view thereof.

In the practice of my invention I provide a stopper-body 6, consisting of cork, wood, or other suitable material and preferably in the form of a truncated cone, as shown in the drawings. The stopper-body 6 is provided at the top with a transverse plate 7, the end portions 7 of which are bent downwardly and sunk into the cork body, as shown in the drawing. A strand 8 of wire or similar material is looped centrally above the plate 7 at 8 and the ends thereof are passed divergently downwardly through the stopper-body at 8", emerging therefrom at 8, from which points at either side of the stopper-body said ends are carried downwardly exteriorly of the stopper-body and in engagement therewith at 8, passed upon the bottom of the stopper at S and twisted together centrally thereof at 8. The extreme end portions of the wire 8 are then laterally projected at 8 at right angles to the portions 8 and sunk into the stopper-body at 8. The portions 8 firmly secure the wire 8 at the bottom of the stopper-body, and the portions 8 ,'which pass therethrough, firmly secure the wire at the upper portions of the stopper-body.

The stopper is seated in the neck of the bottle or other receptacle in the customary manner, and the portion thereof above the transverse plane in which at 8 the wire 8 emerges from the cork body bears snugly against the bottle-neck and forms an air and liquid tight closure therefor. When it is desired to remove the stopper fromthe bottleneck, a fork-tine or other suitable implement is passed between the plate 7 and the looped portion 8 of the wire, and strain is imposed upon said looped portion to extract the stopper. Strain thus exerted operates upon the stopper through the portions 8 and 8 of the wire, which are held in fixed relation by the end portions 8 thereof, and the cork is thus positively extracted. It is furthermore evident that the greater the strain imposed upon the wire 8 the closer will it become engaged with the stopper-body." The plate 7 provides a firm bearing-surface for the extracting implement and prevents the destruction of the cork thereby.

I do not limit myself to the specific construction and arrangement of parts herein specified, but reserve the right to vary the same within the scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A stopper of the class described, comprising a body member or stopper proper, and an extracting member which consists of wire or similar material which is connected therewith, said wire being formed into an open loop exteriorly of said body member at a predetermined point, the ends of which loop project into the body member or stopper proper, the said loop being adapted to receive an extracting implement,and an impenetrable.

plate connected with said body member between the same and the sides of the said looped portion of the wire, whereby the extracting implement may be guided over an unobstructed and impenetrable surface beneath said loop, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
