lCE-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 665,549, dated January 8, 1901.
Application filed February 21,1900. Serial No. 5,9 97. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER J. RANKIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Percy, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in ice-tongs; and it consists in providinga double arm upon the one side and connecting the two arms together at the top to form a handle, together with the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown a perspective view of my improved ice-tongs, which is constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
To construct a pair of tongs in accordance with myinvention, I provide two arms 1 and 2, bent in the proper form and pivoted the one to the other by a suitable rivet 3. One of these arms, I, is formed from a single bar and the other, 2, divided below the pivot 3 into two grappling-arms 2, each having sharpened ends 5 to engage with the ice. Connecting the two arms 1 and 2 at the top is a handpiece 7, formed with hooks 8 and 9 to engage with links 6, attached to the arms of the tongs. One of these hooks, 9, is open and the other, 8, closed, which will permit disengagement of the one end of the handle 7 from its link 6.
By the use of tongs constructed as described the three points 5, engaging with the block of ice, will prevent any oscillating or swinging movement of the same, thereby enabling the user to carry a greater load with more ease than with the ice-tongs now in common use.
The handle-piece 7 maybe disengaged from one of the links 6 to permit a greater spread of the tongs and used on large blocks of ice.
Slight modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, the combination with the two curved arms 1 and 2 pivotally secured together and the latter of which is divided to form grappling-arms 2, said grappling-arms 2 and the arm 1 having notched gripping ends, of the links carried in the upper ends of said arms, and the curved handle-piece having the hooks to receive said links, the hook engaging the link carried by the arm 1 being closed and the hook engaging the link carried by the arm 2 being open.
to permit the disengagement of said link, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OLIVER J. RANKIN.
