NrrEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK BALDT, SR., OF CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
ANCHOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,500, dated January 8, 1901.
Application filed October 2, 1900. Serial No. 31,738. KNO model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, FREDERICK BALDT, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of VDelaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Anchors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following speciiication.
My invention consists of an improvement in anchors, in which a movable shankis connected with the head by means of a pin passing thro ugh the head, and is further provided with means whereby the shank will engage with the head if the pin is broken or displaced for any reason.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularlyT` pointed out in the claims.
Figure l represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical sectional view of an anchor embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of a shank in detached position. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of the crown with the shank removed. Fig. Il represents a plan View of a portion of the crown, showing the opening therein.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the gures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates au anchor, the same being formed of the crown or head B and iukes C, said head B being provided with a bore D and having an opening E therein, said opening being adapted to receive the end of the shank F, whichV latter is provided with a curved face Gr and having the lugs or projections H on opposite sides, said shank being provided with a bore therein. The opening E in the head or crown is provided with. the curved shoulders K, with which the lugs H are adapted to contact and to move thereon, said opening being further provided with the tongues L, which are cut away at their lower portion, forming the passages M, as will be evident.
The pin N passes through the bore D in the crown and the bore J in the shank and locks the parts together.
The operation will be readily seen. The shank Fis passed through the opening E from the bottom thereof until the lugs H engage with the shoulders K, when the bores D and J will be in alinement, and the pin N is inserted therein and properly secured to the crown, it being evident that the shank canturn on said pin as an axis, said lugs H engaging with and moving on the shoulders K and entering the passages M in their movement, it being evident that if the pin breaks the lugs or projections will permit axial movement and prevent the loss of the crown and iiukes.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope ot' my invention, and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction I have herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In an anchor, a crown having iiukes, a shank pivoted within an opening in said crown, and abutting lugs and shoulders 0n the crown and shank situated between the pivot and the bottom of the crown.
2. In an anchor, a crown having flukes, a shank pivoted within an opening in said crown, shoulders within said opening concentric with the pivot, and concentrically-curved lugs on said shank engaging said shoulders, said lugs and shoulders being situated between the pivot and the bottom of the crown.
3. In an anchor, a shank, a crown having iiukes and provided with an opening therein, shoulders in said opening, tongues in said opening, and lugs which are adapted to engage said shoulders for permitting movement of said shank with respect to said crown.
