ELECTRIC-RAILWAY MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,337, dated January 1, 1901.
Application filed December 30, 1899. Serial No. 742,128. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. MERRIOK, of Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric-Railway Motors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in the field-magnet frames of electric-railway motors, and is designed to provide a dust-proof frame having certain novel features of construction and combination designed to facilitate access to the inclosed armature for any desired purpose.
With this object in view my invention consists in a field-magnet frame formed with detachable upper and lower main sections and separable end portions in which the armature-shaft is journaled, together with fastening devices so arranged that either the upper or the lower framesection may be removed, leaving the end portions and the armature in the opposite section.
The invention also consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of a motor frame or casing constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a central transverse ver tical section, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line ocxof Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the laminated pole-pieces.
The letter A designates the upper section of the frame, and B the lower section thereof. These sections together form a frame or casing of general rectangular form, with circular openings at their ends and rearward sleeving extensions D. The division-line between the body portions of the two sections preferably coincides with the center of the armature and the division-line of the sleeving extensions with the center of the axle upon which they are sleeved.
E E are separable end portions which are seated within the circular openings at the ends of the frame and make a close fit with the edges of said openings by means of grooveand-rabbet joints h. Secured in these end portions are bearings E for the armature shaft.
The top and bottom portions F of the frame are formed with the inset portions H, which with the laminated pole-pieces F, secured thereto, form the salient poles of the motor, being surrounded by the coils G. Similar laminated pole-pieces divided coincidently with the division-line of the frame are secured on the sides of the frame and form the two consequent poles of the motor, the two halves of each of said pole-pieces being separately secured to the frame, as shown.
The two casting-sections are separably connected to each other by means of a long bolt I at each end and short bolts 1 at the sleeveextension portions. The bolts I are each passed through perforated lugs or ears K K on the respective sections A and B and also through a lug K on the separable end portion, being secured by a nut at its lower end and also by a key or cotter 7c, inserted through a slot in the bolt just below the lug K By removing the nuts k and also the nuts 70 on the lower end of the short bolts I the lower frame-section B may be removed, leaving the armature, together with the end portion E, in the upper section, while by removing the said nuts, together with the keys or cotters 7c, the bolts I may be Withdrawn and the upper frame-section A removed, leaving the armature in the lower section B. Thus either frame-section may be removed from the other without disturbing the armature or its bearings.
It will be noted that the center of the armature is elevated above the center of the sleeving extension, which gives the bottom of the frame sufficient elevation from the road bed when in use; also, that I avoid inclosing the truck-axle within the motor-frame.
I do not wish to limit myself to non-essential details herein shown and described, as these may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an electric-railway motor, a horizontally-divided fieldmagnet frame, having openings at its ends, end pieces secured in said openings, and securing-bolts, each of which passes through a lug on the end of each of the frame-sections and also through a lug on the end portion, a nut securing the lower end of said bolt and a key or cotter passing through said bolt below the lug on said end portion.
2. In an electric-railway motor, a horizontally divided field magnet frame, having openings at its ends, end pieces fitted to the said openings and carrying the armatureshaft bearings, and securing-bolts engaging projections on both the frame-sections and carries complementary semicylindrical parts of sleeving extensions, the line of division between the body portion of the main sections being horizontally in the plane of the armature-axis, and the line of division between the sleeving extensions being horizontally in the plane of the driven axle and below the plane of the line of division between the main sections.
4. In an electric motor, a closed frame formed in two main sections, the line of division between said sections being horizontally in the plane of the armature-axis, and laminated pole-pieces divided coincidently with the frame into two sections separately secured to the respective frame-sections.
