STEAM-G EN ERATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,357, dated December 18, 1900; Application filed November 29, 1399. Serial No. 738,642. g (No mode.)
To ali whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. MORRIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, Hudson county, State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam- Generators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to steam-generators of the multitubular type, and has for its object to produce a generator of the multitubular type which will operate reliably.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown a generator constructed in accordance It will be understood, however, that the drawings are illustrative merely and that I do not mean to confine myself to the structure therein shown.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of the generator in one-half section. v Fig. 2
is a central longitudinal section through they generator; and. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the tube-sheet, showing the arrangement of the tubes.
In the drawings, 0. represents the watertubes, which communicate at their ends with manifold-chambers b, c, d, and e. The tubesheets f of these manifold-chambers receive the said tubes. The tube-sheet f 0f the manifold b is parallel with the tube-sheet f of the manifold-chamber c, and the tube-sheet f of the'manifold-chamber d is parallel with the tube-sheetfof the manifold-chambere. These tube-sheets fare herein shown as curved and of the same thickness as the shell of a boiler of the same radius would be. The other shell g of the manifold-chambers b c d e is curved oppositely to the curved tube-sheets f and is of the same thickness as a boiler-shell of the same radius would be. The thickness of the curved tube-sheet and the thickness of the curved outer shell 9 of each manifold-chamber are in proportion to each other as the proportions of their respective radii to each other. The manifold-chambers thus joined by the tubes are in the present instance shown as located in an inclined position in the casing it over the grate-bars or fire-bedj. A pair of batfies or deflector-plates tare provided,the battleplate i being located immediately above the lower set of tubes and the battle-plate being located immediately above the upper set of tubes, so as to direct the flame and products of combustion downward longitudinally of one set of tubes and upward longitudinally of the other set of tubes, with a chimney or flue Z. The lower manifold-chambers e d are connected by pipes m n to the manifold-chambers c b, respectively. The chamber 19 is connected by pipe 0 to the steam-drum p, which in turn is connected by the pipe q to the lowermost manifold-chamber e.
By referring to Fig. 3 it will be noted that the water-tubes 0. are arranged in rows, with a passage r between the rows, so that a wounded tube may be removed laterally from its row and conveyed down the passage out of the boiler and a new tube similarly brought into position and inserted.
The parallel arrangement of the tube-sheets is an important feature of my invention, as by this construction I am enabled to employ sets of tubes of the same length, and in some instances,where the shapes of the tube-sheets permit, great convenience in forming the holes therein is achieved.
By making the tube-sheets f of a curved form the well-known arch efiect is produced, and they are thus better able to resist the high pressures produced in the boiler of the class shown. 7,
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a steam-generator, the combination of a plurality of sets of inclined water-tubes, a separate manifold-chamber at each end of each set of tubes and aseparate tubular connection between the manifold-chambers at each of the adjacent ends of the two sets of tubes, the said manifold-chambers each having curved tube-sheets, the tube-sheet of one chamber being parallel with the tube-sheet of the adjacent chamber to which it is connected by the set of water-tubes.
2. In a steam-generator, the combination of a manifold-chamber having a curved wall 9 and a curved tube-sheet f the said wall and sheet having their concavities toward the inside of the manifold-chamber, their thicknesses being proportioned to their respective radii, another manifold-chamber having a curved wall 9 and a curved tube-sheet f and being of a general meniscus form in cross-section,the thicknesses of the Wall and tube-sheet being respectively proportional to their radii, the tube-sheets f of the said manifold-chambers being substantially parallel, and watertubes to of substantially the same length;
3. In a'boiler, the combination of suitable tube-sheets, a group of tubes arranged in double rows with apassage between adjacent double rows of tubes to allow a wounded tube to be removed from its row laterally, and an open space at the end of the double rows of tubes, whereby the said tube may be removed from the boiler.
4. In a water-tube boiler, the combination of a manifoldchamber having a curved wall 9 and a curved tube-sheet f, the said wall and sheet having their concavities toward the inside of the manifold-chamber, another manifold-chamber having a Wall 9 and tubesheetfand being of a general meniscus form in cross-section, the tube-sheets f of the said manifold-chambers being substantially parallel and Water-tubes a of substantially the same length entering the said tube-sheets.
5. In a water-tube boiler, the combination of manifold-chambers b c d e, each having a curved shell 9 and a curved tube-sheetf, the tube-sheets of the manifold-chambers b and 01 being parallel with the tube-sheets of the manifold-chambers c e, respectively, inclined water tubes 0!, entering the said parallel curved tube-sheets of the manifold-chambers and tubes m n, a tube at each pair of manifold-chambers connecting the manifoldbhambers b d and c e respectively.
6. In aWater-tube boiler, the combination of manifold-chambers b c d 6, each having a curved tube-sheet, the tube-sheets of b and c and of d and 6 being substantially parallel, sets or groups of inclined Water-tubes a connecting'the manifold-chambers b c, and d e, respectively, pipes m nconnecting the manifolds c and e and-b and (1 respectively, a steamdrum p, a pipe 0 connecting the uppermost manifold-chamber b with the said steamdrum p and a pipe q connecting the lowermost manifoldchamber e with the steamdrum p.
